They’re MANPADS, so somewhere that you have people to carry them around and shoot them. They’re arguably more effective in a later guerilla type campaign (jump out and try to pop a helicopter or ground attack plane then run back for cover) than they are as trying to serve as a frontline AA system to counter an initial strategic bombing campaign.

Russia has the means and resources to become self reliant and Russia has more than oil it can export. That's why my comment that it will take laong term for Russia to feel a pinch. Whether or not Russia can be squeezed economically is certainly up for debate. As for freezing accounts etc.. I don't Putin cares and has prepared for such actions over the years.

Given President Biden's speech and him stating the sanctions will be implemented over time it's obvious this will not cause any disruption in Putin's plans.

I saw that earlier. But I would think the number would be higher in a target rich environment. Ukraine has a 215K man army. I’m hoping they are up for the fight. With 1000 anti tank javelins at their disposal I am hoping they use every one of them and inflict heavy damage. It remains to be seen but initial reports are disappointing.

 

Right now the military targets are getting hit with missiles. There’s no question Russia has air superiority, and it’s not like Ukraine is going to lob missiles the other way. Ukraine military almost has to go into hiding, they can’t just sit at military installations which are all obvious targets.

The question is what happens when the Russians move into the cities. How much of a fight can the Ukrainians put up in urban guerrilla style warfare.

From a city perspective disruption of power, water and food supplies is all that is needed.

I saw video of a large helicopter assault on an airfield with reports of others. Of course I’m not saying that the Ukrainians can be everywhere with stingers but an airfield seems like it would be one of the places you would want to deploy them.

 

I don't think sanctions do much but why is Biden not implementing the harshest of sanctions right away?

 

The harshest sanction (and Biden tried to put a good face on it) is booting Russia from SWIFT. But that’s the EU market and we don’t control it. And Germans and Italians aren’t ready to go without 90% of their natural gas in the winter. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

 

Sounds like Italy and Germany need a little more convincing to do the SWIFT sanctions. Hopefully there is another round. I think Putin should be directly sanctioned as well. If this doesn’t qualify for a “head of state” to be slapped with sanctions, what does?
