Seems Putin may have underestimated things. That or he went off bad Intel. Betting his circle was telling him what he wanted to hear versus the truth.

Only if Putin survives this. WWI Russian soldiers who returned after surrendering found a more forgiving environment than they were expecting … of course, they were then thrown right into a years-long revolution, but one bridge at a time.

I'm wondering about this. If enough Russians protest this/are against it, and enough soldiers refuse to kill their own people if sent to quash protests, at what point do the military higher ups say enough & take him out? (Either coup or assassination)

Big part of the operation is the attempted capture of Borispol Airport west of Kiev to facilitate transport of military assets right to the capital. Encircle the city, disrupt government functioning, strike at the heart of govt. operations. Russia is giving all Ukrainian servicemen the option to lay down arms and stay out of the fighting. Many are taking the opportunity. Ukrainian armed forces in disarray. Pockets of resistance are shooting erratically, sometimes at civilian objects. Two Russian civilian freighters have been sunk, apparently, with rockets from Ukrainian coast guard. Odessa already ceded? Information moving too fast to catch up, and much of it of doubtful accuracy.

 

This would trigger NATO article 5.

I would suggest that by deploying US troops to Poland and Romania, including over 5000 from the 82nd airborne out of Ft. Bragg N Carolina is part of that process. They are a rapid deployment, highly mobile detachment that can quickly move anywhere along the Ukranian or Belarussian border as needed. Further, initial elements from the 101st Airborn Assault unit have also been deployed to Europe from Ft. Campbell Kentucky. Lt. Gen. Michael Kurilla from Airborne Command Corps has also been sent to Germany to coordinate actions of the airborn units, and he is reporting directly to US Cent Command. It would seem like a coordinated plan of defense is starting to reveal itself.

At latest count, the US had 80,000 service members still stationed in Europe and additional Airborne units in the United States are preparing to deploy. Assuming that half of those are combat personnel (no idea really), but in conjunction with NATO allies, that is enough to blunt the current invasion force of ~ 100k massed in and around Ukraine. Not to mention, I assume that many of our NATO allies will be armed with far more modern weapons of war than the Ukranians were able to muster.

"Rolling into Europe" may not be the cake walk that many are making this out to be.

 

I bet a couple just got cancelled in London after Johnson froze the assets of Russian banks in the UK.
