It’s clear to me that we have some posters with an over-attachment to Mike White the person, that we have to keep having this tired conversation. It’s beyond time to stop with the excuses and rationalizations. He’s not getting it done here, and we deserve at the least, to try to get a better product and results. He deserves to find that himself also. Tonight was yet another disappointing data point.
i will not debate anyone’s opinion about it being time for change. And there is no argument that Mike hasn’t been afforded time and opportunity. But i often hear the rationale that “we deserve” better. And so I am genuinely curious …. who is the “we” in this statement?
E8 isnt a great year? I mean we've only had 5 great seasons ever then. I think we have had 10 or so great years. E8 is great. An E8 bid might end on a bad not, but the season as a whole is great.
I am ok either way at this point, but Mike being such a great guy and ambassador makes it where I won't be mad if he comes back. The hope for improvement is the reason why I would be ok if it ended Its been a very rough couple of years for Mike with Covid, injuries and Key's situation. I still think a healthy Key and we arent even having this discussion. But depth has been an issue and part of that is on Mike, so I get the argument. I wanted Mac fired. I wanted Muschamp fired. I dont WANT MW fired, but will be ok if he is or isnt.
This is what it boils down to for me. At this point I feel like I know what I am getting with White. We will be good enough most years to make the tournament, maybe win a game but no real threat to compete in the SEC or national level. I think we can and should be more than that, so at this point I am willing to take the risk and see what someone else can do.
It was frustrating last night, especially that CC's effort did not result in a win. However, the Gators did not lose to UGA, they lost to a very good Arkansas team that's on a roll. Hey, they are a better team by every measure. Barring an 0-4 finish I suspect he is retained, unless of course he wishes to leave, which some have suggested he may. I suspect UF will consider the loss of KJ and Dru as factors helping his cause. So, perhaps another year is in the works. But I have to believe that the ice is getting really thin.
As a single data point, you're 100% right. Nobody could be upset by last night ... alone. But the trend has not been great.
100% agreed, good post. This is where I'm at with White and have been for the last three years - the faces change but the same script plays out year after year. making a change is obviously no guarantee of improvement, but I'm just so sick of watching the same bad offense and inconsistent play over and over. I think coach White has had plenty of time here and the results have shown that regardless of how hard he's trying, this situation is not getting any better, and so I think keeping him past this year is just prolonging the agony for everyone involved, including him. He deserves a chance to start over at a different place and see if he can get his mojo back, but I don't want to have to watch him try to do it here anymore.
The injuries on those teams plus Dupay getting thrown off the team, Miller and Harvey leaving early, Kwame not showing up and James White bailing out kept those teams from being national title contenders.
It was a good year, but IMO it could have been better if Cheese and Canyon Barry started and played more. They were great players. Instead, Cheese played about 20 mpg, half of which was at the 2-guard spot.
We are not going to stay 5th. We are sinking. Somewhere around 6th might be the high end in a season until Oklahoma and Texas arrive, and who knows after that.
You, by saying “if billy is the benchmark we will be forever disappointed.” Point I was making is being disappointed with 5th in the sec fair? I think so and that doesn’t mean I’ll be forever disappointed. On coaching, how many back cuts did arky score on? Us? And why does cc still struggle to pass to the weak side out of a double team?
You popped into the middle of a conversation, so you are missing the context of my post. A poster was commenting that he was trying to view our recent years in the same light as 2001 through 2005. I remarked that those Billy years, though early flameouts, we’re still very good regular seasons. . . better than recent years. The poster joked that I was bringing down any remaining positivity he held. I offered token solace that any comparisons to Billy will never be favorable. The post was never meant to “call out disappointment”. I am disappointed.
People forget Billy had his own adversity to deal with as well when making excuses for White. I will say I will always wonder what egbunu and keyonte could have done for our seasons those respective years. The overall trend line however is what it is regardless.
When you still regularly have disappointing late game collapses, roster issues that must rely on transfers, poor clock management, etc in year 7 it's not going to change. It's not the players or culture when you've had time to completely turn the roster over twice. It's not the school support or resources with a recently renovated arena and Jordan support. Mike White has shown us multiple times now that he isn't able to successfully adapt and create a well rounded team. It's time to look elsewhere.
