I am not a coach and don't claim that I could be a successful one, although my father (to be) coached a pre-NBA pro team until WWII intervened, and one of my brothers coached my old high school's team for many years. Putting that aside, If I was in charge of the Gators after the end of last season, I would have done the following: 1. I would have met with Glover and told him that, although he would have to earn it, I envisioned him as the starting point guard for this year's team, playing 25+ minutes per game and running a Gonzaga-type offense and a high-pressure defense. 2. I would have met with Scottie Lewis and told him that, although he would have to earn it, I envisioned him as the starting 2-guard playing out on top in space, playing 25+ minutes per game in a Gonzaga-type offense and a high-pressure defense. 3. The same as 1 and 2 above for Samson Ruzhnetsev at the 3 and CC at the 5. 4. I would have told Omar Payne that I was shifting him to the 4 and helping him learn a face-up game and that he would be playing about 20 minutes per game with the possibility of occasional minutes at the 5. I also would have told him that I would expect him to play excellent on- and off- ball defense and to move the ball and set screens on offense. Any scoring above 5 or 6 points a game would be gravy. 5. I would have told Duruji that he and Payne would be playing the 4 and he could expect to play about 20 minutes per game. 5. I would have told Appleby that he would be the instant offense man off the bench, would play both guard positions and could expect to play around 20 minutes per game. 6. I would have told Niels Lane that he would be in the rotation as the 4th guard and could expect to play 5 -10 minutes per game. 7. I would have told Kowacie Reeves that he would be the backup 3 and could expect to play 10-15 minutes per game. 8. I would have old JJ that he would be the back-up 5 and could expect to play 10-15 minutes per game. 9. I would have told Kennedy and Gatkek that they would not be in the 10-man rotation but would get some playing team and would possibly move into the rotation in the event of illnesses and injuries. 10. If everyone above bought in, I would not have signed any transfers. Mann and Locke almost certainly were moving on, so they would not have been in my plans. I believe that this would have been a really good team.
Lewis was not staying. Payne getting 20 min would have not been good for us. Gatkek would be better as would Duriji heck Felder also. Payne is not a starter or a 20 min person. Samson was playing pro ball. Lane is getting that now, would you have played him if not ready early in season. Reeves needs at least 20 min a game. Agree on JJ and Glover.
If I was in charge of the Michigan basketball team in 1993 I would have: 1. Told Chris Webber not to call a time out...
No I know lewis was not staying and Samson was playing pro.If you played Payne 20 min a game you would be a 1 year coach. Reeves only 10 min you were crying he was not playing enough earlier in year. Same with lane. Flip Flop. Are you in politics?
How does CC fit into your preseason discussions? How do we run a Gonzaga type offense without Gonzaga caliber players? I am guessing that you think Glover is at least as good as Nembhard. Really?
H He does. Also he was not expecting much from CC. Now that he played well for us he knew it. It's Michigan coaches even thou they were the ones who taught him not White, who messed up not playing him. Also Illinois coaches have done wonders for Payne.
Noah Locke Stats, News, Bio | ESPN Noah Locke has not gotten better since transfer to Louisville. Maintained same level of regressed slightly.
Andrew Nembhard College Stats | College Basketball at Sports-Reference.com Andrew Nembhard has not really improved much since transfer. Similar stat lines.
Omar Payne College Stats | College Basketball at Sports-Reference.com Omar Payne stat lines have not improved. Slightly declined this year.
Interesting. 40% from 2, 24.2% from 3 last 6 games (6.3 ppg). Scary thing is, that 3pt % in conference play would be 5th best on our team right now (4th if you take out Felder's 16 attempts). But I think the bigger story here is how are Louisville fans representing right now!? 11-14, 5-10, 7-Ls in a row!. Are they showing up at their games? Happy with their coach? Go GATORS! ,WESGATORS
I’m not sure if these questions are rhetorical, or a semi-sarcastic reference to our discussion. Or neither. But I will take the bait…. UL fans are fantastic, and rabidly follow the program. Will their frustrations temporarily reduce attendance? Probably. Will they complain loudly when things are not going well? I’m sure. But will they otherwise be often apathetic and conspicuously absent? Hell no. My point is…. UL fans, and others similar…. may bitch, moan, complain or even protest. But will also cheer, follow and support with equal intensity. Kentucky is probably the perfect example of this. Those fans are totally nuts and often entirely unreasonable and reactionary….. but they are equally fanatical/crazy in their support and following. And so the bitching, even if insane, seems a bit more genuine - even somewhat justifiable. Why? Because they are bat-shit bonkers in both directions. The “fans” who make themselves heard in down times, yet otherwise never seen …. those are the ones who kinda bug me. And we have a lot of em, imo. If my twitter feed is any indication…. Florida has countless super-interested fans. Or at least ones just interested enough to wanna fire the coach. Ugh.
Always been a fan since dad took me to Alligator Alley. I'll be there tomorrow. It has been quite frustrating lately.
well, the coach was fired already - in mid season. During year 4. 5-5 in conference play at the time he was fired. His tenure looked like: overall. Conf 20-14. 10-8 24-7. 15-5 13-7. 8-5 6-8. 5-5. And then canned
A little of everything and nothing major, but two things come to mind: (1) I am genuinely interested to see if their fan support falls off (or has fallen off) at their home games since they've lost so many in a row (I won't watch to find out, but I'm still curious). [speaking to the idea of longevity of at-home support vs. folks bailing when team isn't as good; is Louisville separate from the pack on this note?] (2) Shortened COVID year and not finishing this year after a strong regular season showing, and it's chopping block time...does this mimic the kind of fan base and patience that we wish we had? To this point: Fair enough. It does seem that FLORIDA has more than its fair share of fans that attend that only get vocal when they have something negative to express (particularly in the SEC). I would imagine message boards and sports talk shows are similar across the board (people just aren't inclined to speak up to say positive stuff as much as they are negative stuff).
