+/- is a staple of NBA stats, but rarely seen at the college level. CMW cited Lane as +14 in his 13 second half minutes, which really paints a great picture of a guy that took but one shot, had no rebounds and didn't score.
So happy for him to have that kind of game. Gatorcountry article said he was the MVP vs OSU and I agree. Earned significant minutes going forward. Imo, he's the best on-ball defender on the team. Completely changed the game when he was in.
I really appreciate what the OSU coach said about the difference in the two halfs - "Whatever Coach White said to his team at halftime was about 10 times better than what I said to my team." But what he said was - "Niels, you're going to start the second half."
My very brief period of playing pickup basketball was dubious at best. One time in the UNT gym a bunch of us scrawny musicians came up against a skilled athletic group. One of their players dribbled the ball between my legs, running right past me and probably scoring a layup or dishing for one. When he tried it again, I changed my stance in time, blocked the ball, gathered it and dished ahead for a runout layup. Probably my only good play that day and we got waxed, but it was still fun. On topic: So good to see Lane get in the game and make some game-changing plays on the defensive end. With the ongoing small ball lineup, I hope he continues to play and contribute. It was also fun to see Jones make the three that put us ahead, then sink some big FTs. Maybe he will get going from here.
Coach White said he was trying to piss off his team and get them mad by calling them soft and sitting the starters to start the second half. Niels has not gotten minutes in a long time. Coach White played him to piss off others. It appears he may have been sitting a nice defensive presence. When you look at our losses, we are getting dominated by the opponent’s guards. The same was true in the first half of this past game. Niels can shut down one of the guards on defense
Mike White would have Pete Maravich riding the bench for making behind the back passes to open team mates, for making long court passes under handed into the hands of running team mate, and for rebounding at both ends.
If he thinks he will start or get good mins he will, if not he won't. No players from any team sit anymore why would you to easy to leave.
The way CMW allegedly dismissed his presence when calling him in his office probably drove him away at the end of the season. You shouldn't disrespect kids and expect them to stay on your team.
Plus it's at practice and would be "fun". Doing it in a game might draw the ire from a coach, but let them have a fun at practice. Use it as a coaching moment.
He is saying it's easyto transfer, and kids that are not playing leave, and of course kids that are getting a lot of minutes tend to stay

No basketball coach I ever played for had the approach you are describing. You absolutely do not screw around in practice... ever. Practice was never about fun, at least in my experience.
