Let me preface this by saying our defense was incredible yesterday, and even with our woeful shooting we won by almost 20 points. However, I question our shot selection sometimes - specifically why are we shooting so many 3s when they're just not dropping? It's not like we're normally hot from 3 and this was an aberration. Let's look at yesterday's stats: 3-pointers: 9-36 25% 2-pointers: 14-24 58% That's a 33% differential.. and 60% of our shots were 3-pt. 60%! I know above the arc spacing helps 2-pt efficiency in general, but WHY are we taking so many 3s when 1. they're not going in 2. we're getting such high efficiency closer to the basket. At the half we had 4 players that were a collective 0-9 from 3. At some point we're either going to 1. need to learn how to shoot or 2. take fewer 3-point shots. If we can't shoot (and at this point it's pretty obvious that's not our strength), we have to stop chucking...and find ways to get off better, more efficient shots. It's infuriating watching miss after miss.
Mark Wise talked about it during the Mississippi State game. He was advocating them shooting earlier in the clock. He said the likelihood they would find a better shot later was minimal. Our problem is that without CC, we have no inside game. We can't run our offense inside out without him because the one big we have is not an offensive threat.
I'll add that the majority of our two's came off of offensive rebounds and scoring off of Vandy turnovers. They rarely came from an offensive sets.
I see him getting better, but until defenses start respecting him and collapse some, it will be hard to get the inside out action that we have with CC.
I was not upset with us taking so many wide open three point shots. They were great shots. They were like the shots you take during warm-ups. I just get upset with missing so many.
Agree in principle @jeffphillips21, but also think it's a symptom of the way we are being defended. Teams know we can't shoot and so they invite it. Hard not to take the open looks. ***Warning*** football analogy - I hate, hate, hate football analogies on the 'Net board, but can't resist in this case. It's a bit like needing to pass to open up the run. We need to be able to hit some bombs to loosen up the defense a little bit and get the inside / dribble penetration game going.
good points guys. I didn't see the game live so must have been missed some of the nuances. I was just amazed at the sheer volume combined with very low percentage. If they were mostly open uncontested shots, it's even more alarming though not as unwise to shoot. I just wish this team would learn (or remember) how to shoot. I can't remember a Gators team missing more 3s, but maybe I'm just getting old and cynical. True Davis, it normally does loosen up the D - so was surprised to see such a high % from 2 mixed with a low % from 3, but makes sense as Tommy said if they were off ORs and TOs. Not to state the obvious but we need to figure out how to generate offense in the halfcourt set, understanding CC may not be back for a while
I have talked about this before. You have put in the numbers to show it is true. I feel instead of chucking, if you get by your defender in 2pt space shoot an open two. To preface this, don’t go to the basket when there are four defenders collapsing there, shoot a runner or pass before you get trapped. this would help with shooting percentages but also TURNOVERS! the two biggest culprits ar Fleming and Applybee. This is pretty simple to see that they are forcing the ball too many times. Keyontae Johnson was the best at going to basket and if he couldn’t finish it in his head, he would shoot a runner. If wide open he would shoot a three if it was there. When any player gets inside the defense, these decisions must be automatic in whether to shoot or if you have a REALISTIC chance to finish. Both these two guards could flourish with better shooting percentages and help the team be more consistent. This hacking it up from three hurts us every time we miss and the opponents get the ball on a fast break, totally makes us dependent on the opposition missing shots. talk to Alabama or Auburn, they just laugh!
iirc, in the 1st half of the game, 9 points came from the offense, the remainder were points of turnovers.
What ever happened to mid range pull up jumpers as compared to flying into 4 defenders in the lane out of control.........sheesh[/QUOTE]
Perhaps, but Jones is giving him a run for his $. Jones is just gun-shy at this point - too hesitant to shoot anymore.
