Well he’s a college coach so he is coach and GM. If he doesn’t have the players that’s his fault too. Maybe he’s recruited the talent but can’t develop it and that’s why he barely has had any NBA players. The number of players that got better under White’s tenure is tiny compared to the number that stayed stagnant or regressed. A coach is judged by their results and Mike’s results are not acceptable.
agree on bringing in players. That has been his down fall. Very few coached would have done any better with same players but your right that's on him.
Nembhard's minutes went down because he moved to a team that had other players. He was splitting time with the #5 pick in the NBA draft.
The definition of average must be different in Cuba. UF has made the NCAA Tournament the last four seasons (and would have been five had Covid not cancelled the event in 2020). Only twelve other schools, and none from the SEC, have done so that in itself, makes UF far above an average program. So does the fact that since Mike White has been head coach, UF has more SEC wins than any other school except for Kentucky. That isn’t “average” either.
I am challenging gatorb on the off-topic that he gave my post. The SEC is getting better and the Gators are getting worse. Yes, the Gators have gotten into the dance, but, with the exception of the Chiozza team, with no chance to do much of anything.
I am reminded of the old line a Supreme Court justice said when he was asked "what is his definition of 'obscene'?". His reply was, "I can't define it but I know it when I see it." I think you are wanting a definition and the Gator basketball supporters are using their eyes. Now do they (and me) deserve a better idea of success than what Mike has provided and looks like for the foreseeable future? Not likely (you vote with your wallet) but will the real voters continue to support the product or will they get a bad case of apathy? That is the $64,000 question.
Dude average its average in Cuba or whatever you are from, the issue its that you settle for a average coach at its best when most Gators fans don't and wants a coach that will take UF to the next step, one more thing dude you are living in the past we are in 2022.
Cumulative stats can be misleading. Mullen had more SEC wins than anybody except Georgia and Alabama in his first three seasons. Schools with coaches that have been in place at least as long as Mike White (last 4 seasons counting this season to date, used wiki, but hopefully mostly accurate): Kentucky 42-16 in SEC, 3-1 in NCAA Tournament Tennessee 37-22 in SEC, 2-2 in NCAA Tournament Auburn 35-24 in SEC, 4-1 in NCAA Tournament MSU 32-26 in SEC, 0-1 in NCAA Tournament FLORIDA 30-26 in SEC, 2-2 in NCAA Tournament Carolina 26-27 in SEC, 0-0 in NCAA Tournament All the other schools have tried something new since the 2015-2016 season, and some of those efforts seem to be fruitful (Alabama, LSU, Arkansas). I think it's a stretch to call us anything more than average even within the SEC right now, but it really depends on how far you want to go back. Go GATORS! ,WESGATORS
lol so what! It’s a single elimination tournament with a ton of randomness. The mark of a good team and a good coach is regular season success. If you consistently get top 4 seeds in the tournament you’ll make some deep runs. Being in the final 32 is laughably irrelevant
I really don’t have much interest in watching Florida basketball anymore and I used to be a huge fan. Apathy has definitely sunk in. We know what we have with mike white. I don’t see us winning any type of championship with him.
White's departure may come sooner than later, but I really doubt much changes when the next mid major coach gets his big break to come to Gainesville. We got very lucky with Billy, a once in a lifetime coach. I've resolved myself to the fact that we have seen the high water mark for a program, the only non blue blood to win B2B in the last 100 years or so.
Yours is an old gator's take (old in good way) on basketball that I can totally relate to. We struck gold with Billy just like we did in the 90s with Spurrier. I knew that the coach coming after each would likely be a bust because who would want to follow a legend. I expected a Zook in Bball but was pleasantly surprised when we got Mike White. Here's where we diverge... Mike White may still not be a Zook - I'm wavering on that but if he doesn't show more progress soon, he will not be head coach and we'll try for someone else and will keep trying until we find our next Billy D. I'm not resolved that we hit the high water mark unless you're citing B2B which is just about unobtainable for any program blue blood or not.
MW did a great job of coaching last night, huh? Maybe, maybe not, but better shooting covers up a lot of blems. We still need 2 good PGs when we don't even have one.
I think you keep trying to find a head coach who can consistently get the team to the second weekend of the tourney (with occasional deeper run) and be consistently competing for the top spot every year in the SEC (going into the last week or 2 of the season). Yes, you give them time to demonstrate that, but 6-7 years has been plenty of enough time.
I'm in no way advocating keeping White for longer than necessary. Just pointing out that finding someone that would do a better job is a tougher than some here might think. Initially, I was opposed to White. I thought Foley was reaching. I changed my mind over the years. Sadly, I don't believe that Billy (or anyone else) could build this program to permanent elite status. Billy did amazing things, but even he knew that it probably couldn't be sustained over the very long haul.
It's not even the tourney for me. The regular season has been the same meandering results year in year out. A couple of years White was downright giddy about the team he had in preseason only to have the same failings as whatever team we had before. Inconsistent. Offensive droughts. Play up or down to competition. Lack of competing for SEC regular and postseason titles. Excessive player turnover. Player performance decline. Etc etc Edit: we had a great win last night but while im still rooting for White I can't get too excited because we've seen this before. A good win followed by a flat loss
Dug an early 0 -3 hole and is now climbing out of it. Vandy is next and it is a winnable game. That gets us to .500, provided UF wins of course. I have been watching coach's sideline demeanor and he seems very different to me this year. He is feeling it (the pressure) IMO. Given an 0-3 SEC start it will be a very tough climb to respectability. We are 2 - 3 now but realistically, UF needs to put together a decent win streak to get off this bubble.
