Watching the Alabama-Oklahoma meet. Sooners score 2x10s on vault. Neither 10 was better than Trinity's 9.95 Friday night. Every Oklahoma home meet that I've watched the Sooners home gym advantage seems to include judges' favorable and elevated scoring IMHO. And it's not only me who has this opinion.
Besides losing Morgan Hurd, I'm concerned about Riley McCusker's ankles preventing her from performing up to her highest potential. I hope surgery isn't required to get her right and strong. Leanne Wong, Sloane Blakely, and Bri Edwards stand the chance to be difference makers. Don't sleep on Edwards, she looks the part and did very well in her first collegiate routine.
Not happy that it happened to Hurd, but we have plenty of depth this year. And as long as it doesn’t discourage her, it means 4 more years potentially after all these super seniors go.
Agree....was honestly thinking the roster was too crowded. This could provide some nice spacing IF she hangs in/recovers well
Just pretend Morgan Hurd came in with the 2022 group which is looking plenty good: 2022: JaFree Scott - 5 stars Sophia Butler - 5 stars Kayla DiCello - 5 stars-----SIGNED Shilese Jones - 5 stars (Dr. Sam says she is definitely coming to UF) I'd like our current season depth better if Riley McCusker turns out better than I think she is now capable of performing due to her chronically injured ankles. If the depth is good enough, do whatever is necessary to get her 100%. I'd be curious to know what Dr. Sam thinks about Riley's ankle injuries.....
I think we have to assume they try and get high quality from limited events from Riley. Hit for us in key spots
I'd be ecstatic if Riley can perform at a high level in 2 events like Alyssa Baumann has done during her collegiate career. With that said, she is capable of being an all-around gymnast if her ankles will allow. Hopefully the UF medical staff has been reviewing Riley's options to get her to be able to perform to the best of her abilities.
197.000 won't beat Michigan, Oklahoma, UCLA, and Utah. It's a good thing bama only had one top beam performer or the Gators would have left the O Dome on the short end of the score. The meet made for better tv than gymnastics performances minus the three 10s. ABC got their monies worth. Hopefully college team gymnastics picked up new fans.
Man, that was an exciting event yesterday! My wife and I had all but given up on the win, but wanted to see a strong finish on floor. I was astounded to hear we still had a chance to win when Trinity started her routine. Talk about ice water in her veins. I don't expect she knew she needed a 9.95 for the win, but she surely knew she would have to be near perfect for us to even have a chance. That was so exciting!
What a great finish to that meet! It was exhilarating to see those 2 10's pop up. It is good for this team to have both the grit to win it and know they have to improve on meet day. The one weakness on this team has been the jitters when it matters most. Maybe this year....
True, 197.00 won't cut it for getting pass regionals. But it was only the 2nd meet of the season and our outstanding freshman class looked shaky yesterday. At our worst, we still managed to hit 197.0. Wong, Blakely, McCusker and Edwards will only get better...a LOT better! And there will not be another meet where all 4 will have an off-night in the same meet. But what was the most impressive was the unity, grit, fire, passion, heart-on-leotard-sleeve and determination to win that the squad demonstrated to the nation. These are characteristics that can't be coached and are what win national championships.
Dr. Sam's write up on the bama at UF meet: Tens to hook: Florida gymnastics makes stunning comeback in national spotlight - Alligator Army On Dr. Sam's website, she is reporting that the meet which was televised by ABC is the second most watched gymnastics meet on ABC/ESPN in the last 10 years, 2011, garnering 624,000 viewers. Hope they counted 2 in my household. That was during the NFL playoff game to boot. Looks like college team gymnastics found some new fans.
Another big match tonight at uga. Even though they seem to be down this year, this is always a big meet...and will be especially challenging in Athens.
Again, we score below 197, but win handily because Georgia couldn’t stay on the beam. Glad we won, but our ranking trajectory is downward.
