UPDATE: Ahmaud Arbery's 3 murderers all found guilty. Sentenced to LIFE in prison.

Just looked, he's 50. Sucks for him. shrug.

 

So, I think he would be first eligible at age 80. And almost no one is granted parole on first application.

 

None of them should be granted parole IMO.

 

Part of his lawyer's defense was that nothing would have ever happened if not for the video. Basically admitting in open court they would have gotten away with murder if it was their word against a dead black kid.

 

Only 1 is even eligible

Probably a lifetime of racism. A few minutes of acting in it and getting caught.

 

So how does that work? A judge from a criminal trial can't just award civil restitution to outside parties, can they? I would think a separate civil suit would be needed.

Not sure about Georgia, but victim restitution is a typical (and often mandatory) part of criminal judgments in many jurisdictions.

 

And they would have gotten away with it if they hadn't made a home movie of them killing him.

 

Also a cautionary tale about taking matters into your own hands after months of social media back and forths getting people worked up. The McMichaels, armed with weapons also confronted a homeless couple about allegedly being in the construction site not too long before murdering Arbery. And based on testimony at trial, there was some facebook group that helped not only to keep people aware, but likely fomented apprehension that would then lead racist yahoos to chase down and kill someone. And a third racist yahoo to join in the festivies despite not having any clue what was really happening and not taking even a second to think to himself that this might not be a good idea.

Bottom line, you can't underestimate the stupidity that drives racism.

 

Life in prison is a just outcome here. Terrible case.

Lord ain’t helping a lot of folks on this earth who need helping.

 

And sends a very strong message, which is a big part of punishment.

 

That's an intuitive conclusion, but not one that's borne out by the data. Long sentences actually have very little deterrent effect.

 

I read back through the first couple pages of this thread. Not going to tag anyone but damn.

 

I don’t mind the message sent by racists being given life in prison for a modern day lynching of a Black man, significant deterrent effect on murder generally or not. If it has any deterrent on racists acting on their beliefs and reminds them that, while they may not value the lives of minorities, society does, it is worth it.
