With all the excitement about Coach Napier's new massive instructional/support staff, I was wondering if any of the concepts will be applied to the basketball program. Similar to Coach Napier modeling his program after the gold standard of Saban, shouldn't we strive to model our basketball program after the gold standard of Coach K? Very similar to Saban, Coach K has an army of staff/analysts, though many are volunteer positions, I think. There's no reason UF shouldn't, for instance, have an @Efawcett7 on staff to look at analytics. Seems that teams of recruiting support staff (on a smaller scale) could help.
I found it interesting sitting behind the Bama bench, all their staff were really involved with coaching, standing, and talking (yelling) while play was going on. Our bench it is just Mike White up and coaching until a player comes to the bench. Kind of felt like Bama had 5 coaches on the bench.
They mentioned during the game that Nate Oaks uses a large staff for analytics. For being the Flagship University, UF is so far behind...
More analysts, yes. I nominate me, to run an offense, since chuck and duck, chase your tail doesn’t work. Like Alabama, we would drive the hoop with aggression. If the driver gets boxed out I would work on quick passing the ball around to the open shooter. Chucking threes before someone tries to drive the hoop, gets you a place on the bench. Also, driving the ball inside, trying to force the ball to Castleton in traffic, usually disaster. They know we are going to try this, so let’s do something different. Don’t force the passes inside if the player is not open. Another chance to ride the bench. Our offense in a nutshell, watch the other team be aggressive and we slowly react and the momentum is lost once again. If a player can physically get to the hoop, he should be playing, Reeves drove once and got to the hoop. He showed we can get there, either score or get fouled. He is big enough and talented enough to get better, as of right now, probably with minutes, he would show out more often. He needs more playing time, freshman or not. Jitoboh is also showing us he can get some points in heavy traffic, when we stall. some of this is due to CC not being aggressive till someone hits him in the face. He is nearly 7’, good god, with his talent he should be getting 20 and ten every game. But he disappears at times, we lose the momentum then the game turns into just chuck and duck. Felder has the body, a pretty stroke and handles the ball well, he should be starting. We will never be shooting good three point shots till we can perform around the hoop, closer shots, free throws and rebounds. Quick passing out to open people, not across the court where everybody has a chance for a steal/runout. ENOUGH!
You are definitely starting to see vast differences in support staff between different basketball programs, like what you saw with football under Mullen as opposed to other SEC programs and, of course, under Napier now. Analytics and scouting is a lot of work--it's a lot of straight up man hours. It also requires a deep understand of how to numbers work to be able to to use and implement them in effective ways. A lot of assistants don't have enough time to properly do those kinds of things on top of their regular tasks. So to me it makes endless sense to have much larger support staffs than we currently see with a lot of basketball programs, including Florida, and particularly if Napier has early success, I'll be curious to see if basketball gets the budget and desire to add more minds behind the bench.
You have to wonder if anybody has asked for more staff. Mullen could have (might have), but didn't get it. Napier demanded it and got it. I wonder if Coach White is even interested. Would be interesting to know
Basketball coaches, especially, have a gym rat mentality. I wonder in all seriousness if it even occurs to some to them to ask.
Also, think probably goes without saying--but working with the Gators would be an absolute dream job, and if they're interested, I am easy to get in touch with!
You would be a great addition to the Gator Basketball staff. I would like to be the person walking the sidelines working the refs. Oats and Pearl are the best at working the refs. Last night, Oats brought his team aggressive, with a plan to drive it down to the hoop, every chance they had. At the same time, he directed the refs to call fouls on anyone breathing on his kids while, He did this with passion. CMW just sat there as we got mugged. No substitutions for turnovers, then the rout was on. I know, that I could bring the passion and the ability to sit people that continually turn it over. LOL Efawcett, your analytics are right on the money. Some coaches can share knowledge and get better, I guess some think their system works, the players just have to execute. Right now, CMW needs real help and you could help him. It should be his honor to bring you in. If SS has already spent his budget on football, I could save him money to help save the program. I am willing to market UF Men’s basketball for free. I even take advice! Let’s go Gators!
Yes, I would find a spot, you would have to tell the players that hit the pine often, that you wanted to keep Glover and we are going to transfer someone to your spot ASAP! You could help head up the portal!
Great concept. Mike White will not allow it so move on or accept your role as a slug and look like you are happy
