Metro Atlanta contractor latest arrested in Jan. 6 probe

In a video taken from inside the U.S. Capitol, metro Atlanta contractor Matthew Jay Webler declared Jan. 6, 2021, his best birthday ever. Now he faces charges for his alleged role in the attack on the U.S. Capitol that day.

The FBI arrested Webler last month, charging him with multiple misdemeanors related to the riot and making him the 17th Georgian charged in the expansive investigation.

According to court records, Webler, who turns 43 Thursday, was recorded by multiple security cameras at various points inside the Capitol. He was easy to spot. Court records include photos showing Webler inside the Capitol wearing a bright yellow jacket and a QAnon flag as a cape.

And, like so many of the more than 725 people so far arrested in the riot, Webler posted about his exploits on social media and defended his actions. According to court documents, a voice believed to be Webler can be heard in a selfie video taken inside the Capitol saying, “It’s my birthday, and it’s the best one ever.”

Long interview with a researcher who has been studying who the insurrectionists were and why ordinary people were moved to such extraordinary measures.

That makes sense. Previous studies have shown that Trump supporters in the primary and the most vehement Trump approvers also were heavily predicted by scores on racial resentment scales. It makes sense that the people willing to participate in his attempt to stop a legal election would be as well.

I wonder about how much of this is due to people that have these ideas being confronted with two social changes: the diversification of suburbs and the changing demographics of some small towns. I hypothesize these because one of the other big determinants of Trumpism is that you didn't leave the area where you grew up.

The trend Post-World War II was that white people left cities and moved to suburbs, partially for racial reasons (with suburbs often enforcing segregation for the first 20 or so years and then de facto enforcing it by not socially welcoming minorities for a period of time after that). Now, you have two developments: the development of a black middle class and the gentrification of parts of cities, which are both serving to diversify the inner suburbs especially. This could be leading some with high racial resentment that lived in those suburbs (and didn't move back to the cities themselves) to feel like their chosen life is collapsing as they are now forced to deal with minorities at a scale which makes them uncomfortable.

Another factor could be that some small towns have been becoming more Hispanic, as many of the white people left for better opportunities in larger metro areas. This forced agriculture, resource extraction, and other industries based in rural parts of the country to find people willing to take jobs at places like meat plants and the such, leading to small towns that are held up in population by growing Hispanic immigrant communities. The white people who didn't leave then start to feel greater racial resentments as the nature of their town (often the town they grew up in) changes.

Curious what gop’ers think of this key theme for the maga types that attacked the capital?

“When you ask questions about their belief in the great replacement, you see that that is head and shoulders the No. 1 belief”

“the No. 1 factor that’s predicting whether someone believes in the great replacement versus not is racial resentment—that is, specifically resentment of minorities who get what they see as special privileges. These fringe beliefs like the great replacement are now no longer confined to the fringe. This is overall a mainstream political movement.”

Now those are some interesting texts. I’m looking forward to Sean Hannity arguing that a Fox News employee is entitled to executive privilege discussion with a President.

Also a timing issue. He can launch the next insurrection at a more strategically potent time (right after an election).

I find it interesting that, on the anniversary of an attack on the institutions of the American democratic republic, that is the type of post he can muster.

The reality is that it is because he wishes he were in the Capitol building that day because he is cut from the same cloth as autocratic loving fascists that attempted to undercut our democracy, but will try to clothe himself in patriotism and the flag while trying to avoid the clear consequences of his love of a cult of personality.

    Honestly, it’s sad.
