I'll never understand the folks who are adamantly opposed to the vaccines. But I completely understand the folks who don't want to deal with a bunch of COVID restrictions again. After so long, it feels pointless. This virus just refuses to go away, and it's frustrating not being able to return to normalcy.

Which is worse...unvaccinated healthcare staff in full PPE or vaccinated staff that's walking around with active ongoing Covid treating patients, thus spreading it? What part of bringing staff in even if sick if staffing faces critical shortage makes any kind of sense?

Why? To make a point? Point made - they're admitting they messed up without admitting they messed up.

Incidentally, being in the field, 2 nurses I'm friends with that work in one of the bigger hospitals among those let go didn't want the vaccine because they were pregnant. They wanted to wait til after birth. They were told no. They asked about going on leave early without pay to keep their jobs & were told no.

As someone who has 2 kids. When you're pregnant you are hypervigilant of what goes into your body. There were meds I stopped because I was told they were safe, but it was never a sure thing. ZERO chance I was taking risks with my babies.

But yeah evil nurses working long hours in PPE saving lives. Oh the horror

As long as folks don't go crazy grabbing hydroxychloroquine again. That was a nightmare. I'm on that for my lupus/RA. Lucky for me I get it in 3 month batches so I was able to withstand that surge.

Story on that- had a pharmacy tech at Walgreens go off on me, saying how people like me getting prescriptions for this to use for Covid were disgusting & I should leave it to those who need it. I made her get the pharmacist (yes that was a "let me speak to your manager moment), made them pull up my info, and Whoops!...didn't she feel stupid. She was redder than a Santa hat and fumbling through her apology.

Unvaccinated die at a rate 14 times higher than the vaccinated.

No amount of Marion County blather changes that statistic.

My diet use to be crap. My wife has gone heavy plant based. I still do meats. Lean and more Mediterranean overall. There is no problem enjoying some things that are not healthy on occasion. But with the healthy diet…moderation! :)

*sigh* my son just woke up with a low grade fever, body aches, etc. No sick contacts. I know the likelihood of it being covid is low - we're all vaccinated, he's fully masked & 6 ft at school, etc - but will keep an eye on him. Brings to mind that yes vaccines are important but we need more widely available therapeutics. Glad to see Pfizer & others coming up with some. He has asthma but no wheezing thank God.

Normally prior years this is when we're getting hit with flu & other infections w the cold but covid has added a new dimension.

    Ugh :(

Heck even alcohol in moderation is good. I think the issue with the plant diet thing is WHAT to eat (same as not plant based). Pigging out on highly processed plant burgers, for example, won't do someone any favors & they'll sit there thinking they're just fine because meat is evil.

We have patients who refuse to eat salt because it's bad for you, but they're passing out from low pressure or have arrhythmias because people need salt to function. So they have to take salt tablets or other meds. For an issue fixed by shaking salt on their food.

my daughter is on it and during the 'surge' her pharmacy would only give her increments of 14 days supply.

Oh wow!! There were some store pharmacies doing that but I got lucky. This happened as the whole rush to get it started. Timing was everything in 2020 for me - seems like I was always just ahead of the shortages (meds etc)

He will be. Leaving in a few minutes to do so.

Edit - & yes, aware, which is the reason why PPE is important and ridiculous to fire people over a shot that does NOT keep you from either getting covid or spreading it.

Edit 2 - didn't go. Remembered that he'd been tested last week & it was negative (rapid & PCR). Luckily he's feeling better but if needed will take him Sunday.

I was speaking in general terms. Healthcare workers who refuse to get vaccinated have done a tremendous amount of damage for the example they set. I've seen many times where folks have said something to the effect of 'my cousin's a nurse and she isn't getting vaccinated so I'm not either'. They simply shouldn't be in the field. It's like a physicist who doesn't believe in gravity or a priest who's an atheist. Wrong field.

Report: Hundreds of Fully Vaccinated Oregon Residents Die of COVID-19 (westernjournal.com)

Hundreds of fully vaccinated Oregonians have died of the COVID-19 virus in spite of their vaccination status, concerning new data reveals.

While the majority of cases are still among the unvaccinated, breakthrough cases appear to make up for around 30 percent of new cases in Oregon, according to data collected by the Oregon Health Authority from Nov. 6 to Dec. 11.

Overall, there were 49,250 known breakthrough cases reported to public health authorities in Oregon, which were found in each of the state’s 36 counties. Of these, 2,177 were hospitalized, or 4.4 percent, and 622, or 1.3 percent, died.
The OSA makes clear that as not all breakthrough cases may be reported to health authorities, these figures may give the misleading impression that the actual figure of breakthrough hospitalizations seems in higher proportion to overall breakthrough cases than it might be were the total figure of breakthrough cases known.

“This report includes only those vaccine breakthrough cases which are reported to public health following a positive test result,” the agency states in its report. “Many vaccine breakthrough cases are believed to experience no symptoms or minimal symptoms.”

While it is heartening to know that hospitalization rates may be lower than 4.4 percent of the total fully vaccinated population, the fact that there are still over 2,000 people who have been hospitalized after completing the full vaccine series and over 600 who have died from the virus is pretty alarming on its own.

That Oregon report, if you actually read it, does a terrific job of showing how effective vaccinations are. The Western Journal mangles it in an effort to show otherwise. I don't know why so many on the right are so determined to get their rightwing brethren killed by covid. It makes no sense. The only explanation I can come up with is sheer stupidity.

I understand that women who are pregnant may be more vax hesitant than others, but we know of no good scientific or medical reasons for such hesitance. There does appear to be reason for avoiding infection.
    COVID-19 Pregnancy - NYC Health

People who get COVID-19 while pregnant are more likely to get severely ill or die from COVID-19.

COVID-19 vaccination is recommended for all peoples ages 5 years and older, including people who are pregnant, recently pregnant, breastfeeding or wanting to get pregnant. The benefits of receiving a COVID-19 vaccine during pregnancy outweigh any known or potential risks of vaccination.

That we know of. On a vaccine that's relatively new. They're already in full PPE so why risk anything happening to their unborn child over a miniscule chance?

I know some women don't care. Others are hypervigilant.

My dad is an Agent Orange vet. They were told oh no big deal. My issues stem from HIS exposure.

For how many decades were women told it was safe to drink or smoke while pregnant? Until wait, it wasn't.

One of my seizure meds "only" had a 10% chance of birth defects which dropped to about 0.5% after week 24. Those defects weren't mild. You couldn't have paid me to risk it.

Luckily they have spouses that have good incomes but that facility lost a lot of experience. Over what?
