Sabans personality definitely rubbed some Dolphins players the wrong way. Then again, he was somehow able to win 9 games his first season as coach with Gus Frerotte and Sage Rosenfels as his QBs, so if we’re comparing Saban vs Meyer’s NFL stints I’d give the edge to Saban.
Well, at least Spurrier was honest about it. He told the media that he didn't exactly leave the cupboards full when he left. Meyer just lied to the world with drivel about spending time with his family and sitting out forever for his health; then he immediately signed on with his media gig and turned right around and strolled over to OSU. Spurrier has always told it like it is. Meyer?
Send in the lawyers to soak up some billable hours, the Jags are claiming they fired Urb for cause. I believe he’s owed $40mil per his contract. “The Jaguars contend Meyer should not be owed the remainder of his salary, but league sources said they expect lawyers for Meyer and the team to eventually work out a settlement as part of the firing, with the expectation that it will end up being for less -- and potentially significantly less -- than what Meyer is owed. His repeated leadership failures are widely known, and several ownership sources contacted at the time Meyer failed to fly back home with the team in Week 4 believed that alone was cause for termination "for cause," and therefore without pay.”
I agree with you. The Jags have every right to limit the damages. In this case the damages are having to pay out $40 million dollars to Meyer. I doubt that the Jags will get all of the $40 million. However, Meyer's actions will cost him in the litigation that will come. Meyer does has some bucks in the bank. But he does not have enough to litigate against the Jags. A long litigation case will drain him financially
It won't go to court. These cases never do. Urbs will get a big chunk of his buyout, at least half, and no one will talk about it. And Urbs has plenty of coin to hire lawyers to fight if it comes to that. Khan also has plenty of money to pay the buyout and not scare off the next coach he hires by not doing so. Which is why he won't fight in court.
Urbs dose not have the bucks to go against billionaire and his multi millionaire partners. Urbs has at the most a ten million to battle against a multi billionaire. He will be lucky to take half or less and thankfully disappear.
I think a more interesting question about this situation is: how does UM handle it long-term? As a coach, he's never really lost before - except early on in the process of building a program into a success. And, when he wasn't ultra successful, he would quit - always on his terms. Now, he's been publicly tossed out on his ear, on terms not of his choosing. Transgressions that always before stayed almost entirely out of public have come to light. If he fights for his buyout, any other transgressions will come out too. So, he no longer has an opportunity to slink away on his terms. I don't think his personality will let him accept being fired without a fight. And, if he fights, it can only damage his reputation - which I'm not sure his ego will accept.
When Meyer was hired at UF, I remember one of the things he told the Gator players (by his own account) in their first meeting: "I'm not your friend." If he didn't tell the Jax players that in their first meeting, they seem to have found out soon enough.
I am fairly indifferent about Urban. The fact that the press wants him cancelled so badly makes me hope he coaches again and finds great success.
Urban has a lot more than ten million, and he can get a lawyer for a whole lot less than ten million, even IF that was all he had. This isn't going to court. They will work it out; Khan has no desire to fight this publicly, because he doesn't need the money, and it doesn't help the jags. Urban won't want to fight it in court either. Urbs will get less than the full buyout, but it will still be a chunk.
He deserves everything that has come to him. He's embarrassed himself, his family, Shad Khan, his players, the team, and the city.
I agree with you but think Meyer is about perception and image just as much. He won't take a chance on his legacy being further diminished through a fight with a billionaire he would most likely lose anyway. In fact, that's why I think he will try to cherry-pick the right team to come back for another championship run. Too bad ND and USC are now unavailable. I really don't know where he could go.
Meyer's net worth is about $35 million. Please keep in mind that he does not have that much money in the bank. It is safe to assume that he has his money invested in real-estate, and investment funds. Yes he can get a lawyer. However, that lawyer will have the meter running and will require a portion of any payoff Meyer gets. Thus, in the short term and in the long run, this will be an expensive fight for Meyer. What makes you think that Khan has no desire to fight? As of now there are reports that the Jags fired Meyer with just cause. If these reports are true, then it appears that Khan, the other owners, the the Jags management have the desire to not to pay Meyer. Meyer can try to make this issue a public fight but that will only hurt him more than it would hurt the Jags. Also, Meyer will have to defend himself on the Just Cause" and that will be embarrassing.
Isn’t Henry Ruggs looking at 50 years for killing his girlfriend in a drunk driving accident? I’m not sure Alabama’s players are the model of behavior. Every good team has its share of thugs. It’s just a matter of when they ultimately get caught.
