“The next Jaguars coach will be the fifth one that Khan has hired since purchasing the team in November 2011. Under his ownership, the Jags have only had one winning season in 10 full years. If you include interim coaches, the next one will be the seventh head coach under Khan's watch.”
Agree. When you hire Meyer, you are entering into an implied contract that you will put up with some unsavory and embarrassing behavior and headlines in exchange for W’s. Meyer will wear out his welcome very quickly anywhere he goes if he’s not winning big. I didn’t like the hire from the beginning. I didn’t think his motivation tactics would work. Apparently they weren’t. Khan needs to get his shit together and get a real GM in there that will right the ship.
Kliff Kingsbury took a 3-win Arizona team and won 5 games in his first season. They gave him some time. He won 8 games the following season and is currently leading the NFC West this year with 10 wins. Meyer definitely needs some time. Can’t say it doesn’t work when dude doesn’t even have a season to work with.
Methinks his mental wiring was always going to get him in trouble in the NFL. While I applaud his need for detail accounting in all aspects of football and he wants to get players/coaches in a mental frame of mind to overcome adversity, he always burned out before he got too far. And yes, a lot of it had to do with having quality/elite caliber assistants who leave for HC positions and the next round are not as good. Dabo may end up having that affliction now. And so I knew there was going to be a race to what was going to come first, the mental burnout from losing or the learning what makes the new league work? Kicking the kicker, while not a fireable offense, is pretty damn childish and likely a reaction to knowing he wasn't in his playground anymore. The lap dance was definitely a sign that the losing/no longer the alpha male was winning the race. I also think it was a try that Kahn had to do to get a buzz in the program. He "played it safe" for too long. I just wonder if the office demands have gone on too much to allow it to get back to a more "normal" situation. I have to think all that has happened is that Kahn is poorer than he was last year. He has plenty left. The best thing I can say about the Jags going forward is that a bunch of coaches are going to want the job, if they don't see a cluster__k on the inside, with having Lawrence as a building block.
I could care less about 2008. That’s football stuff. We jab you, you jab us back. It’s just part of the fun. I’m not anymore mad about 2008 than I assume you guys are about 2007. Urban Meyer is an incredibly flawed and selfish human being, a supposed leader of men who cheats on his wife and quits at the first sign of adversity. That’s where the karma hits. The same guy that fosters environments that enable guys like Aaron Hernandez and Zach Smith gets the world’s smallest violin when he’s shown the door.
There are two sides to every story. Side 1: If the reported missteps by Meyer are true, then the owner gave Meyer enough time and rope for Meyer to hang himself. Side 2: If the report on Meyer's missteps are false, then Meyer walked into a bad situation and he was stabbed in the back. In my opinion, I did not like the way Meyer left UF. It was like watching a very poorly made TV soap opera. This production was repeated (only worse) in the way he left Ohio State. And repeated again (the worst) when he was rightfully booted from the Jags.
Right. And that would explain why they took a flyer on bringing him back. My point is that Coughlin's return was a talent relations fiasco because of his approach with personnel. It's surprising to me that the Jaguars took a risk bringing in a coach who had no history of working NFL players after they saw with Coughlin the 2nd go-around.
That's been my opinion as well: "hit piece" is a great term for it. In general reporting in sports (as well as other topics) is so much more critical than how I remember it being years ago. There have always been pro teams that sucked but never have I seen such aggressively negative reporting about a coach as Urban Meyer and the Jags!
Does Kingsbury have problems signing free agents? Because Urban most certainly would have. You want to rely on Urban's stellar drafting to fix the franchise?
I don't know what to think about Urban. UF seems pretty far removed from his 1% of the 1% shtick. That was brought home in spades with Hernandez wasn't it! He still kicked Bama's ass in 2008 and brought two titles to Gainesville. He was also immensely successful at Ohio State. His actions also suggest he has some "issues" - The infamous I quit, no I'm back, no I quit again from acid reflux, insanity or whatever it was. He was a damn FOOL for that little stunt in his restaurant. When I watched those videos it suggested to me Urban was hammered or perhaps worse, he certainly did not appear "sober". Kicking his players???? uhhhh I don't care if it was a practice squad dummy signed for 1 week - How would YOU FOLKS like some jerk to "kick you" at work?? I have always hoped that one of you posters would BREAK DOWN what exactly REALLY went on with Urban in Hogtown. I have heard some pretty alarming stories about the going on's under Urban's watch. It REALLY pissed me off that our 12-0 2009 unbeaten season went down the drain, courtesy of Paul Wilson s (PARTY). "Carlos Dunlop" passed out at a red light when he left that party. Hell word even got to BAMA's locker room that UF was not focused and doing shit they should not before the game. I can't link it but I specifically remember an article about it. OH well, I hope Urban finds peace. He seems to have a great family and he has accumulated great wealth, perhaps he should enjoy those things.
Yeah when you’re not assaulting your players and embarrassing your franchise, teams will have no problem giving you some time.
The POS that you referred to is probably the main reason the NFL has not pulled he Jags out of Jacksonville. This many not only has invested $770 to purchase the Jags but he is investing hundreds of millions into the Jags and the city of Jacksonville. He set out to hire the best and he should get more out of his investment than Meyer has produced. Last year Khan had to clean up the S#iT show that Coughlin created. The NFL was not happy about that show. This year Meyer started another S#iT show that embarrassed the city, the team, Khan, and his own wife.
Hopefully the rumors of them moving to London are true. A city that got a team because they had a crying meltdown they werent offered a franchise on the first round...
The thing UM could get away with that stuff with kids desperate to make it to the NFL. NFL players actually have some power and most likely UM didnt know how assert total control in an NFL environment. UM will never be a HBC at an elite program again.
You’re saying players wouldn’t want to play for Urban? That wasn’t the case based on his years of college experience. He’s taking over a toxic locker room and probably needed to clean house.
Khan showed remarkable patience after the Ohio "restaurant" debacle. I thought urban was toast then. He should have known he was on an awful short leash given the performance of his team. I wonder if Urban was really interested in continuing?
