Bull not to late it's just Payne is not great player no matter what school he went too. So now your saying white can turn Jitoboh into a player yet you say he can't coach.
The lack of just "moving the Basketball ", when you aren't a consistent good shooting team, combined with being undersized...really has me scratching my head. I know it's old-school and doesn't hold up to the new 3 or metrics or way the game is played now, but you need more ways to score than standing around, isolation, chuck up a three. Cutting, screening & rolling thru the lane are things I'd wish we'd try. We don't seem to have a way to dissect what a defense is doing, and adjust and take advantage of any weaknesses. Lastly, if you're gonna try and play pressure defense, expand your rotations. Could the guys on the bench shoot any worse... don't think so.
You’re speaking broken English. I said that it’s not too late to turn Jitoboh into a player. I don’t expect it to happen.
You know fishing. I know hoops. I grew up in the Catskills, which has some of the best fishing in the country. But, I played golf, basketball, baseball and softball instead. You and I became knowledgeable in different sports. Fishing - Catskills Visitor Center
I grew up around hoops and it has permeated my entire life. My dad played college ball and growing-up, I was a fixture at the Iona team... games, practices, travel. Living in NY, I played endlessly and attended city camps...where i met legend, Lou Carnesecca. Though I had already committed to Valvano, his departure to NC State changed everything. I would eventually play for Coach C (at the age of 9, all-star game). My childhood move to Florida took me away from the game. I took up tennis - a popular regional sport - so to make new friends. Within a few years, I had a coach.. was on the tournament tour, ranked in the state and an aspiring tennis player. But my love of basketball remained. To the annoyance of my coaches... I played high school ball. I was very small and deep on the bench ... a player who likely would have been championed by TampaJack. But I outscored our starting pg bc I didn’t miss free throws. My stats were solid. Perhaps Samford was in my future. Ironically - it was tennis that ended it all ... a shoulder blowout. In college, I played both sports recreationally... while several close friends play collegiately in ones i had once practiced with and competed against. My sports life would fizzle at UF... highlighted by an all-campus runner-up in tennis (doubles) and some moderate intramural basketball success. But a writing career would begin... first covering Lon Kruger, and his team. Post college, writing continued... but only as a hobby. Fishing and basketball heavy... I wrote for Guy Harvey, Lindy’s Sports Annuals, Florida Sport Fishing and the famed GatorCountry! Playing the game officially ended in 2001 with recreation league title, but a season marred by an ejection for fighting. But playing was offset by watching, studying, writing and occasionally coaching. The writings led me to an assignment for CUSA, where I covered a young coach named Mike White. I would later publicly endorse White for the Florida job- a move that would later threaten to undermine all I have accomplished in the sports world ... which, of course, is very little. And now you know - - - the rest of the story, Good day!
Thanks for the background info. My close friend, Alan Srebnick, was Valvano’s assistant coach at Bucknell, and I believe at Iona. Alan then became Jim Lynam’s assistant at American University. When Lynam took the St. Joseph’s job, Alan got passed over for the American U job and became an assistant coach for the Washington Bullets and then the Detroit Pistons. He eventually got let go when Ron Rothstein was fired by the Pistons and replaced by Don Chaney. He then went into the real estate development business in Florida. Gary Williams was hired as the American U coach and went on to have a successful coaching career. It’s a thin line between success and the lack thereof in the coaching business. When I was a kid, Joe Lapchick was the St. John’s coach. My family idolized him. Lapchick was pushed into retirement in 1965 by St. John’s so they could hire his assistant, Carnesecca, before Lou got stolen by another school. That move by St. John’s cost them the services of a young NYC kid named Lew Alcindor who wanted to play for Lapchick. Carnesecca was a fine coach, but his decision during the 1984-1985 season to start former Gators point guard, Mike Moses, over the younger Mark Jackson, cost St. John’s, IMO, the national title. What surprises me about you, especially considering your background, is that you would beat to death your position that Ques Glover is not a power conference level player because he only had one power conference offer. That kind of stuff has some relevance to me if I have not seen the kid play, but, if I see him play, then my evaluation is based on what I see. In Glover, I saw a kid with both the skill set and the athleticism to succeed at the highest level in college. I saw similar attributes in prior years with kids like Shane Larkin, Erving Walker and Chris Chiozza, so I was able to accurately evaluate them. I also was able to point out Kasey Hill’s weaknesses when I saw him play in high school and I pointed those weaknesses out to disbelieving Gator fans. As to Mike White, I see a very presentable, very articulate young coach, who, unfortunately, is flawed. I disagree with you as to the abilities of the kids who have come to UF and not succeeded under Mike White. There have been way too many 3, 4 and even 5- star players who have not succeeded under Mike White to conclude that they were overrated coming out of high school. Some of the kids were ready to be significant contributors from day one. Others had the potential, but needed to work on some things to succeed. The latter have rarely succeeded at UF. I wish Mike White would have turned out to be an outstanding coach, but he hasn’t, and it has frustrated the hell out of me. When it doesn’t work at UF for a coach in any sport, you move on to the next guy or girl until you hit the home run. I thought that Jeremy Foley did that well. It’s time for Stricklin to do the same. UF has all the resources to succeed in sports, and especially in men’s football and basketball.
Only English I speak. I think Jitoboh had gotten better and can be a 15 - 20 min a game player for us next year. Had improved more than Payne since last year. Payne 2pt ,1 TO a game only plays 8 min a game. Not sure why you think players become AA when they transfer. Locke looks worse. Glover has played well a fan of his but Appleby at Samford would be doing the same.
Who are all these 4&5 stars that White messed up. Mann and lewis in the NBA. If the player did not get hurt he's in the league improved improved
I attended quite a few basketball camps in the NE growing up as well. Spent a lot of time around Rollie Massimino when he was a Villanova and the camp circuit. Played on a few traveling all-star teams on Long Island with Phil Weber who played at NC State and later coached at UF, and Bret Bearup, who went on to Kentucky. I think I met every major college coach in the country when they visited with those two. I played in the Air Force before going to UF and meeting up with Phil Weber again. That is my story.
Great point. The only difference is that I would not have taken any other coach in the country over Billy while I would take 100 coaches over Mike White. If you can't tell the difference between the 2, you might want to consider devoting your attention to women's lacrosse instead of men's basketball.
His job is to win games. If his guys can’t hit shots that’s on him too. Bring in guys that can get open and then when they are open can hit open shots.
We get open, not sure how you teach someone to hit open shots. Not many players hit 40%so guess most can't coach. When we start hitting some he will be the same coach. He is winning games really 1bad loss that's it. 7-3is winning
Ultimately we see this team will probably end up with a similar record as White's previous 4-5 seasons.
What level Air Force team? I played on two different Army base traveling teams in Europe. It was good competition, and I got to see a lot of places. After a workout, I got offered a spot on a lower level pro German team, but I didn’t even know how I’d balance that with my Army job, so I declined. We won the championship one year. I also played on some military teams in the states. I credit them for allowing me to extend I’ve said before that I’m largely a failed basketball player, but I’ve played a lot and still do to this day. The recovery after a game is the worst part now.
