What any person may use to make a sports prediction... personnel, strengths/weaknesses,,etc. Let me use another sport to maybe more clearly make the distinction. Let’s pretend it’s week 3 of the NFL season. One friend tells you, “I think the Ravens could win the Super Bowl.” Another friend tells you, “The Chiefs just lost. They are looking at a wild card/5-seed.” Did those sound different?
I'm not sure what your point is. You made a projection that this is a sweet 16 squad. Then when someone else suggested 7-10 seed (or whatever it was), you said it's too early to make such a prediction. That's hypocrisy, Brent. You just don't like their projection. This team just took a big dump on the court and some folks are calling it like they see it.
lol - no, that’s not it. I think my example pointed out the distinction. And I suspect you recognized the same.
Nope. I have no idea what your NFL example meant. It's in no way a corollary. The Ravens and Chiefs are different teams and the Chiefs didn't lose to a high school team. The Gators are one team with some high peaks and one gigantic crevice. No need to explain the football analogy. Like you, though, I tend to scoff at football analogies when they arise here.
The analogy wasn’t comparing teams nor sports, but rather highlighting the distinction between a prediction and projection based on limited data. I suspect you knew that, also. I can keep with Gators basketball and make the same point. Clearly, I didn’t predict Sweet 16 based upon last night’s performance, nor outcome. The seed projection, seemingly did. My prediction was based upon what i think WILL happen. The projection was based largely upon what DID happen- specifically last night. Now, if someone, having watched the team, predicted its future performances would yield a 7 seed... fair enough. I didn’t read the post as such. Perhaps I misread.
That's just it. You appear to be assuming that the 7-10 seed comment was based on a single data point. It wasn't. In fact, it was based upon a greater amount of information than your suggestion of a sweet16 squad. Oh well, time to move on. How's fishin?
"I really thought we were up until last night, but unfortunately losing last night makes that a little harder as seeding does matter. A 7 through 10 seed makes getting to the sweet 16 harder." Kinda seemed like it was about "last night". As for fishing - I'm projecting to go this weekend. No predictions. . . but that's how things are projecting at the moment! I was in Tennessee the last several days . . .so no fishing. Maybe that was the problem! I will fish tomorrow! Predictions and projections be damned. . . . I am fishing!!!!
CC needs to stop shooting the 3. I know one of the reasons he returned was because he got a lot of advice from nba teams stating that he needed to improve that part of his game. But like Kerry Blackshear before him, Colin Castleton cannot hit the 3-pt shot. So, please stop trying already. Please MW. I think the announcers yesterday said CC was 0-23 or something this season. Time to stop shooting, CC; drive to the hoop where your physical skills are most needed. This experiment needs to stop now. If MW keeps giving him the greenlight for the 3, I will pull my hair out. I don't care if CC hits 100/100 3 pointers during practice if he cannot hit it during gameplay. In fact, we collectively as a team, need to cut down on the 3s. Why are we not slashing to the basket like we did during the first five games? What happened to moving with the ball? Likely because our guys are becoming too soft and want the microwave culture of immediate results. It is MW's job to recognize this and man up to change this. It is his job to ensure our Gator Boyz perform to their ability like we saw in games 1-5. Please, Mike, man the heck up and get mad. Just get mad for once. Why are we not defensively pressing every team on every possession, like we did in the first five games? It's because we are only playing 7 guys now, unlike our previous games. The reason is that MW is now only playing 7 guys only. Why not play the other 4-5 guys on the bench? You know, the ones that got us over the hump vs fsu and osu? Why Mike? Please play all the guys and press, press, press! Time for Mike White to man up and stop the good guy act. Dude needs to ball up and control this team. He needs to ball up and rage against the refs, wrong or right. He needs to ball up and raise hell with the players, both during practice and in-game. He needs to man up now and coach this UF team as if it's his last. Because if he doesn't it will be his last.
I agree with a lot of this, but a couple things . . . I think we are seeing times pack the lane, double the post and fill passing lanes . . . daring us to shoot. And so when that happens, we gotta shoot em. But here is the thing . .. the RIGHT GUYS NEED TO SHOOT. Last night, I damn near threw my remote thru the tv . . . Tyree passed up a good look for the proverbial extra pass - to Felder in the corner. Ugh. As for the press - I think we want to press, but we need to score in order to do so. And yes - we need to use the bench, specifically Kennedy and Kowacie.
You got me. It couldn't have possibly been about more than last night. 2021 - 7 seed 2019 - 10 seed 2018 - 6 seed 2017 - 4 seed 2016 - NIT It's almost as if the comment was in relation to the recent past. Given the recent season results and the current trajectory of the team, it's understandable why one would project a 7 to 10 seed. But maybe I'm wrong and the poster was just overreacting to a single outcome. Glad you're going fishing!
Yes - that would certainly be a reasonable prediction. I read it differently - not as a prediction based upon seasons past, but as a projection based upon the impact "last night" would have upon seeding.
I didn't see the numbers as a coincidence. Could be wrong, though. Let's see how they bounce back against the mighty Ospreys.
Or you could be right. I didn't look at the coincidence, but rather the "up until last night", "last night". Regardless, that really wasn't the crux of our mini-debate, and it seems you see the distinction between my prediction and what I THOUGHT was being projected. And I see how that could be muddled based upon interpretation of the original post. I think we will come out with our hair on fire. I will be very interested in seeing the starting lineup, and if this loss makes White re-consider his 7-man rotation. I hope so.
You're right that I was projecting last night after the loss. I was stating that a terrible loss like last night could severely hurt the Gators seeding especially based on the history of Mike White's teams and their inconsistencies. The loss will hurt the Gator's computer rankings so they're going to have to avoid more bad losses and get some more Quad 1 wins if they want to get a good seed in the NCAAt. Getting the gift last year when OSU lost as a 2 seed isn't going to happen too often so the best chance of getting to the sweet 16 is to get a top 4 or 5 seed. For me anything less than a sweet 16 birth and I'll be dissapointed because like you I was very high on this team (even in the pre-season). I guess we'll find out soon who this team really is, but last night made my a lot less sure about this team.
CC is 0 fer 6 on his 3s, and they mostly have not been close. No more, unless the game is out of reach. Until he can show that he can hit them, he should not be taking them in a game that is still in question. Get your 3s the old-fashioned way, in the paint. I am okay with him taking the 10 to 15-footers; he's shown he can make them when open.
No adjustments to the back door cut, none. And without any scoring From outside shooting at all, teams are going to pack it in and force to's and will continue to outbound us. We are easy to defend, clog the middle and say if u beat us it won't be from close range shots.
