I share the frustration of others as it relates to White not using his bench enough... both for depth, and punitively. Tonight, the latter was needed. White should’ve done the hockey line change... sending in 5 reserves. I think he missed a chance to send a message... one that could’ve turned the games, but also carried thru the season.
He coaches scared most of the time, which results in using less players. Even when some players are playing their worse, he’s still scared to give someone else a chance. Kennedy got 8 mins tonight but still no JJ or Reeves, which is crazy, yet again.
Would love to know where Stricklin stands on White. Is it we make the tournament each year so no reason to make a change... or is it if we have another inconsistent decent season (out of the top 4 in SEC and lose in 1st or 2nd round of the tournament) and Stricklin feels 7 years is enough and he's wants to go in a different direction. My guess is if the Gators make the tournament regardless if it's a 10 seed, White isn't going anywhere. Not saying that's necessarily wrong, but would love to know if Stricklin views us a a top 32 program or a top 16 program. If he does view us as a top 16 program, than a 10 seed, losing in the 1st or 2nd round isn't good enough and he'd strongly consider making a change.
What has to happen for you to change your mind about White being the best choice for the Gators? Honestly just curious. Pretty sure I’ve made my feelings known about him as head coach.
It can’t just be a coincidence that we’ve had tired legs in the last 2 games where White shortened the bench right? The second and bigger issue that has plagued White for years, is that he doesn’t know how to consistently motivate his players. There’s something about his dynamic with his players that prevents it. Too young, too nice, too buddy buddy, too much of a players coach? Idk Donovan was also a young coach, but overcame that as the years went on, and he demanded respect, he used the bench punitively, and locked players out of the gym when they didn’t show up for a game. Between the first championship game to the 05 team, he had similar issues though with the likes of Walsh and Roberson.
To me it appears to be a combination of both. I think Mike wants to see a certain defensive intensity and rotation along with competent offense (let's leave the specifics out of the latter) and so he is likely 1) embracing the first first and if you aren't doing this you just don't play and 2) he knows that SOMEONE has to make a shot. I think the reason why Kennedy played is because he can make a shot. What I am not understanding is why Lane did not play. He didn't show up in practice on defense? JJ I think just can't move well enough to be out there for any "crucial" minutes because Mike is scared of the results. And my guess is that is why Reeves didn't play (defense). But to your point AKA, you HAVE to send the message that the HC can make you embarrassed when he wants to by putting your butt on the pine. It does not mean for the entire game. I think the "step back in order to step forward" is lost on his psyche.
