The last time I recall such an unnerving loss in December to a lower tier program . . . Dec. 20, 2010. The 20th ranked Gators lost to Jacksonville at home 71-68. Granted, that was a solid JU team, but the feeling was awfully similar. And confidence was not buoyed in an uninspiring 11-point win over Radford in the next game. That 2010-2011 Gators team ended up 29-8 (13-3), won the SEC, earned a 2-seed and was a referee whistle from the Final Four. In the wake of that game ... I adopted my signature from the infamous "ClawDad". Can this Gators team have a similar rally? Will there be a new ClawDad? We will see. . . .
that was an OT loss, nothing like tonight. But even if you did compare them, that team had three quality big men 6-10 or bigger in Murphy Macklin and Parsons. And Young was 6-9. And oh by the way, that team also had Prather, Yeguette, Wilbekin and Erv. So talent levels aren’t remotely comparable. And we had so,e guy named Billy, who made a big change after that game to go inside out, with Macklin in the post kicking out tomsaid shooters, and the whole season turned around. But yeah, it’s one game.
I wish I could feel some optimism right about now, but I feel like I’ve seen this story far too many times with White. Hopefully we do see that kind of turnaround, just hard for me to get my hopes up given this coach’s history.
...and yet they lost to JU, which was kinda the point of the thread. Look, I have no interest in keeping other fans optimistic or engaged in the season. I didn't gloat when we were 6-0, and I won't hide now. Nor, will I write-off the season. A few posters have opted to do so, I have no compulsion to change minds.
Again an OT loss is very different than how we got dominated tonight…but my point was that upside is central to a turnaround, and that team had light years more, and a much much better offensive coach. There was far more reason for some optimism. But if this team gets to within a whistle of the final four, I will gladly and proudly admit I was wrong.
I'm not sure. I remember that year and Jacksonville had a good season (finished 19-11). They beat us in OT, not by 15 and was 7-3 when they played us.
Hate (love) to be that guy but... who was the coach of that 2010 team? Did he have any history that would have given confidence to turn it around, unlike the coach of this team?
I guess my point was . . . there was a time a far superior Gators team lost to a much inferior opponent, and still had a very good season. Will this team do similar, even if not reach the same heights? I don't know. But I'll be here to find out. Go Gators!
That Jacksonville team wasn’t 0-7 and White isn’t Donovan. I was getting my hopes up once again but now I’ve come back to reality and feel like kicking myself for thinking White had finally turned a corner. It’s not meant to be for White at Florida. His ceiling is making the tournament most seasons and then a quick first weekend exit. He had one year that seems more and more an outlier that made the Elite Eight. White doesn’t have “it”.
We need to change some things for sure. I understand miss shots it happens.but to keep giving up backdoor cuts and shooting non open 3s I don't understand. Still believe this can be a top 3-4 SEC team
But you compared a good team to a winless team that just smoked us, not beat us in OT by 3 points. Jacksonville at the time was 7-3, not 0-7. You can make up all you want but the sports world is on fire tonight, and all for the wrong reasons. Besides, Billy earned having down years since he won 2 titles before the 2010 season. And to this day, Billy has never lost a game this badly but with White, this seems to be a recurring theme. This is a senior team that should be able to beat any 0-something team at home. You don't see any other ranked team losing this badly at home. I've gone back 40 years and can't find a game like this. I found buzzer beaters and close losses but not one where a ranked team at home was dominated by a lesser program that hadn't won a game yet.
Dominated on the boards and offense for second game in a row reverted to last years stand around and chuck up 25 threes. 10 total assists. Appleby had a second awful game in a row. Looks like Oklahoma ga d teams a blue print for how good defend our O. White needs to adapt
I don't get making a big deal about this loss. This was, for all intents and purposes, this team's first response to a loss playing together, and it wasn't a very good one. I think the response on Wednesday and again on Sunday will tell us a lot more than a single data point no matter how ugly it looks right now. Whatever judgment will be made on this team, good or bad, will have to do with much more than a single loss to Texas Southern. And while I agree this loss may have been worse than that JU loss, people were irrationally flipping out about that game as well. It's just in some people's nature. Go GATORS! ,WESGATORS
