Bad loss, but don't give up on the team just yet. Someone asked me why I didn't welcome previous naysayers on the hype train when we were undefeated. This is exactly why. I like people who are ride-or-die. When coach starts missing the tournament multiple times, then I will re-evaluate my position. As it stands, I'm riding with Coach White and this team. I'm not mad at those who want Coach White gone. We disagree but we all want the Gators to win. Let's just respect each other's views and keep it pushing.
I think most have actually been pretty level headed and cautiously optimistic up to this point. Many of us like White the person, as an ambassador to our program, and want him to succeed. But this isn’t a “relax, it’s all good” type of loss, so need to preemptively look to shame posters who have eyes and memories.
I doubt we miss the tournament (barring injuries). We got a couple of quality wins under the belt. But after the last two, I’m also doubting we will be much better than .500 in league play. It’s setting up pretty much exactly the same as the last several years where we were up and down, pretty much middle of the league and just had those quality wins to get us in vs. the bubble. This is probably the single worst loss of the White era.
Me too. We lost on the road to a good OK team, but a team whose entire team might add up to a single 5 star, this was the biggest upset this season so far. So goodbye to the rankings for a while.
No "probably" about it. I'm a White supporter but we got absolutely embarrassed today. It wasn't just a game where the ball didnt bounce our way. They thoroughly beat us in all aspects of the game. This can go one of two ways going forward. We shall see.
I know at any given time in a basketball season some pretty crazy things happen. And yes, football fans are not very good at understanding how the season doesn't end with a loss, against a bad team notwithstanding. But I would remind you that this is Year 7 for Mike and Associates. The wash, rinse and repeat cycle is getting old for plenty of fans. I knew this year was going to be THE year he needed to show he has gotten over a hump in his progress. It appeared as if he did it, as amazing as the season started with so many new pieces that have to mesh. If he got them to a place that worked up until the opposing coaches figured out the team and now he has to figure out a Plan B or C then I don't see anything else on the horizon but real apathy towards men's basketball. And I want Mike to truly get over the hump because I can't see any coaches who are Billy Napier on the horizon. As I posted on another thread, N Fla is going to be the Samford game, analogy-wise. And to me it was probably THE game that put the final nail in the coffin with Mullen. Mike's game to me is going to be Maryland. If he doesn't have the team focused and playing fast like they did against FSU he is going to be Dead Man Walking. I don't mind good looking losses. Bad losses are BAD.
The OK loss didn’t bother me much at all, though I said I was disturbed there were zero defensive adjustments against their back door action. Unsurprisingly, Texas Southern played some of the same sort of action against us even without having a 5 that is a 3 point threat (which is what Castleton had to honor against OK). That last game might have been a “matchup” problem that we didn’t adjust too. Not sure you can say that here, it’s just bad D and bad rotations. Guys just not paying attention and not keeping their guy in front of them. Need to get back to fundamentals.
The UNF game was always going to be a very scary game. Doubt many people have paid attention but they are 2-7 and have the #4 Strength of Schedule. They've played an absolutely brutal out of conference schedule and are battle tested. I thought it was a game we might lose before we lost the last two. Now I have no idea what to think.
A loss like this is a symptom of a much bigger issue. FSU and OSU were fool’s gold wins. Just watch - this team won’t make it to the tourney.
We play street ball with these transfers. They are rugged defenders but none to great at putting the ball in the basket. It worked a bit early on but it seems that we’ve been figured out. I expect we go less than 500 in conference. Will another finish in the mid tier of the SEC doom White? He’s just not bringing in enough talent. What Billy did was amazing at a school with no basketball tradition.
Actually they have to do better in almost every facet of the game and that would include coaching and preparation.
