Vince Carter went to play for the only guy that held Michael Jordan to less than 20 points per game: Dean Smith.
I was there also. If I recall correctly.... Leron Williams had a very good game. I remember Tom Penders saying afterwards that Florida would be unbeatable at home.
Lon: why couldn’t you recruit at Florida when both of your successors have done so well in that department?
I can see Vince Carter saying that, but Carolina for a long time bought Toyota suv’s For their players, this coming from what no state fans told me. Lon might have some insight. Money could have been involved, who knows. Didn’t have to even go to class, just register for African American culture studies, you get an A automatically. This went on for a long time. I don’t know if they had it when he went to school, but who knows. Maybe Vince could come clean now with the statute of limitations.
Agree, and it was a wonderful ride for Gator Basketball fans who were starving to see our program get to that level.
Actually Lon could not get Chicago players because he ran a clean program. Bill Self had no problems when coaching the Illini.
I really liked Lon and hated to see him go. Coaching is a tough gig. I will always appreciate him for the '94 team.
Don't forget to thank UCONN's best player whom bricked two free throws that would have won the game for them!
Donyell Marshall. I was watching him brick those in a Crown Room in Atlanta and had to leave to catch my flight and had no idea what happened in OT until I landed.
Met coach Kruger once in College Station. I was there on business and they were in town to play Tamu. Turned out we were at the same hotel and I saw the team in the lobby. I approached coach Kruger just to say hello and tell him that I was a Gator. He was very nice and spent about ten minutes talking with me. Seemed genuinely pleased to do so.
Great article Brent. Some new information in there I hadn't heard. I will forever be thankful of that run Coach Kruger took us on in '94. That's the only Final Four I've made it too, but it was awesome even though we lost.
