The videos here will be on twitter so you'll have to click to view, likely... in the second half, mike white ran two dribble drive plays that I tweeted out, because they are right out of the Nate Oats alabama play book. Then, fast forward to the final minute of the game.... White runs a COUNTER to that same play that's a lob for duruji. Look, I know Mike White has had his limitations coaching on the offensive end (and still does in some ways) but in this particular instance he made a brilliant coaching decision and he deserves a ton of credit.
Well, at least I finally learned what that is called after 40 years of playing basketball. I've probably done this instinctively a thousand times without knowing it had a name.
Good eye, Eric! I didn't realize it during live action, but yeah, that was a fantastic setup. Tyree really executed late in the game. May have made a big shot late too, I don't recall.
I have been very critical of his offense, but it does seem like they are coaching more off-the-ball movement and ball movement this year. When we went away from it at times in this game, we struggled to score but we did it a bit better late in the game.
How many coaches would have passed on calling timeout on that last play? It took a lot of trust in his players to take advantage of the final 5 seconds of chaos and get the W.
What a great finish and a gut level win! I have been very critical of MW for the past 3-4 seasons. I think his teams have been timid and soft (maybe a reflection of leadership) and I feel like when the pressure was on deep in games he would panick a bit. I recall a few instances last year coming out of a timeout where you just scratched your head at the play call. That being said, I like this new offense he is running. Much more suited to the current roster. I think these guys are tougher than our Football team. Is it their DNA or is MW instilling it in them? Time will tell because I do believe a team will take on the personality of a Coach.... is MW as soft as he looks? I do think that MW panicked in those closing seconds. Jones gets the ball and any reasonable coach calls a timeout there. He claims it was bobbled, but I still think a timeout would have been prudent. Set up a game winning play with 5 or so seconds left. Mike had a deer in headlights look and Appleby made a fantastic play. Great for the good guys, but all my props are going to Appleby on that one. I guess I need to see more for MW to win me back over (im sure my approval is keeping him up at night). This team is fun to watch and they certainly appear to be on the right track. Go Gators!
And it was tied, so at least an OT if we missed. Wonder if we were down one if he calls a timeout to draw up a play?
Great stuff, Eric. One of the things I miss no longer being on the insiders boards is your basketball analyses. Thanks for posting.
Lob set up by the earlier dribble drives. Almost like throwing the out early in the game and getting the corner to bite later on the out and up.
Time outs allow the defensive to set and take too long to run a more effective offense with an inbounds play. Play on with 7 seconds, scattered defense on the floor and an aggresive offense with the ball.
