I’m not really “fretting”, and Whites recruiting class already looks good…. on paper. I was just responding to the theory that White had “turned the corner” to find this style of play. With the way CBB is going, we might have no idea about the future until all the transfers and grad transfers shake out, might have to do that every single year now.
Jason Anderson was. And I like players that play hard. That is how I played. But I don't want any Grayson Allen types. That is more "punk" than "nasty".
Now that would be New Mexico when Norm Ellenberger coached there. He actually recruited guys in prison.
My take is that Mike, like Billy, liked to recruit scorers and then teach them how to play team defense. The problem IMO is that the guys Mike signed did not seem to embrace what he was teaching or did not have enough basketball IQ. Anyways, it seemed that when the ball did not go through the hoop the defense suffered. This group, at least this early in the season, do not seem to have that gene.
Mike Miller was not of that type. He was a beast on the boards as a two guard. Freakin' NBA rookie of the year and made "the shot" in the first round against Butler. But UD was the guy that was the glue.
oddly- at la tech, he went after guys who were a similar profile as the transfer kids we have now, though not the same skill level. He went after the gritty, athletic, defensive-minded kids. I think he struggled trying to figure out what type he needs in order to compete at this level. He went after some high profile guys who just weren’t a match. I think he has seen that experience. toughness and culture and often more important than star ratings.
He has done well in the transfer portal and also has signed a couple of big forwards a 4 and a 5 star for 2022. The best of both worlds.
So far.. so far, I love this team. Coaching staff seems to have stopped improved as well. I know, I know I tell myself it's early in the season get a grip.
What Sloan did would hardly get 3rd page sports coverage now days. They seemed to be after Florida and went for the jugular.
There's a level of aggression and toughness I see from this team that I haven't consistently seen from previous Mike White teams.
