Coach K grandson arrested for DWI

In Florida if the officer determines you are intoxicated the blood-alcohol is irrelevant. My son found that out several years ago and was charged even though he was under the legal limit. We retained an attorney only to find out the way the law worked.

 

Why is this even newsworthy? Is it a reflection on the kid's grandfather?

 

If you’re underage the limit is .02 in Florida. Don’t know where this happened, but did see that they where 19 and 20 year olds. Most states have a zero tolerance policy for underage dui’s.

*edit* looks like it happened in NC which appears to have a .00 policy for underage drinkers.

 

Sucks that the kid makes national news because of who his grandfather is. Not really fair to him.

 

Yep. I’m sure he also never benefitted because of who his grandfather is either.

 

Of course he has, but that doesn’t mean he should be used as a tool to attack his grandfather as a national punchline. It’s a bit of a cheap shot.

 

Maybe if every dui got their face in the national media, we’d have less Henry Ruggs type incidents.

 

I’m not defending his behavior, I agree with you on the seriousness of driving drunk. Only saying that this kid is being singled out because of his family ties. It’s a cheap way to take a shot at K - who I don’t even like. It’s like when politicians kids get dragged into the news, I don’t like that either, regardless of party.

 

Probably fewer, too.

 

If he wasn't a Duke basketball player and if he didn't have a star player with him, this probably would not have made the news. But this is the second time he is causing a big headache for Coach K and Duke, which is newsworthy.

 

Same thing happened to Dan Werner.

 

Yes, but the number has to mean something. They can't presume you are drunk if you blow over .08, then not presume you are sober under .08.

A good DUI lawyer would work them on that one.

 

0.08 is sufficient to show impairment, but not necessary. Somebody under 0.08 can fail a field sobriety test.

A "veteran" drinker could probably pass a field sobriety test whilst blowing over 0.08. A "rookie" drinker could fail a field sobriety test whilst blowing less than 0.08.

 

We had one and he told us straight up what the officer said would be the deciding factor.

Evidently my son got sick and was outside the car throwing up when he told his girlfriend he should not have had the beer he did.

 

Driving the lottery picks car when pulled over. Anyone find that suspicious? The walk on is driving the car for the drunk lottery pick? Who thinks they quickly switched seats?

 

We will never know, the liberal sports media will cover for Coach K. Part of their Tobacco Road $.
Sweep it under till something else diverts it attention away from the Duke program. It probably will never be brought up again till the walk-on is given probation. Nothing here.

But they will talk about Dan Mullen anything they can to hurt the Florida Program, just pile on while talking about Nick Saban’s pristine program is the model for all D1 football programs.

 

While DUI is certainly a serious offense, I couldn't help a bit of a chuckle from reading that he was apparently arrested not in Durham County, but in Orange County, which is home to Chapel Hill. Sometimes being less than 10 miles from your arch rivals can be problematic...

 

The legal limit is a bright line over which a subjective assessment of impairment is unnecessary. Below the legal limit (or at it, as here), the officer can still determine that you are impaired. Yes, it is obviously better to test below, because you can fight it more easily, but generally the laws are written to make it a crime to be impaired (not just to be above a limit).

In any event, he is almost certainly going to be better off doing a plea and/or diversion than trying to contest it.
