Correct on all 3. Red Auerbach was both the athletic director and coach of Kutsher’s. He also formed a summer league in the Catskills that had an absolute boatload of teams. When we started our summer team, the glory days were over because of gambling issues. However, we still played against some really good players, including Otto Moore who played for the Pistons for several years and John Kuester of UNC and the Kansas City Kings. We also played against a lot of guys who got into coaching. One of them that I particularly remember is Ronnie Rothstein who became the had coach of both the Heat and the Pistons. I remember him because he didn’t look like much of a player, but when he started playing really well, I asked someone who he was, and I was told Ronnie Rothstein. He used to be the captain of Rhode Island. Most of the time, we never found out who we were playing against. We showed up. We played. We went to
Roark’s Tavern and drank beer. It really was the best of times. I will post a picture of a team from Tamarack Lodge. Let me know the name of at least one player.

Walt Frazier, Lewis Alcindor, wilt

 

I think that Oscar Robertson and Walt Bellamy are also in the photo. The white guy also was well known, but I am drawing a blank on his name.

 

Not hoops but there was an Amazon Prime series called, I think, Red Oak, about a young guy who is the assistant tennis pro at a Catskills resort. And several episodes of Mrs. Maisel also took place in the Catskills

 

Red Oak was a really good series. I didn’t realize that it was supposed to be a Catskills resort. I did see the Maisel episodes in the Catskills, including where she performed at the Concord Hotel. In real life, my father-in-law managed the sundry shop at the Concord, and my Uncle Joe was a waiter there. It was quite a hotel, but it’s gone now.

The inconsistencies came from long, athletic teams that pretty much took our outside shots away. Locke would be MIA in these games as he had no ability to create and couldn’t get his shots off on designed plays.

 

That group would give most any team today a run for their money.

 

I agree with the second part, but not necessarily the first part. I think that if it were long athletic teams that gave us problems that it was coincidence. We had some guys that just disappeared, largely because of mindset and or talent level. Scottie Lewis is doing the exact same thing in the NBA preseason as he did at Florida. He’s passing up shots to his teammates, while his teammates are more than happy to chuck up brick after brick. As you said, Locke is limited offensively, so if he’s not hitting the three, he’s a liability.

Being long and athletic is a good start, but that’s not stopping a good offensive player.

 

Good offensive players? We had Tre and that was it.

 

That’s the point. It wasn’t that we struggled with long athletic teams, it’s that we weren’t that talented, offensively.

 

I agree with you. Maybe my response should’ve been to @gatortenor37 on why we were inconsistent.
