Bader had an excellent day yesterday in a doubleheader against the Cubs. He went 3-4 with a jack in Game 2. Game 1 was 2-4 I think. His batting average is up to .262. Cards are en fuego. They have won 14 straight.
Probably too little too late for the Cards. One of my best friends in grad school at Illinois was from Carmi way down south in Illinois. Played baseball, basketball and golf in HS and was really good at all of them. A back injury derailed it all. Folks from there were either Cards fans or Reds fans. He was a Cards fan. I knew that I could push his button just by by saying "Lolich". Funny that it wasn't McLain that year.
The Cards are basically guaranteed to make the playoffs now. They can’t catch the Brewers for the division but they will be in the playoff game vs either LA or San Fran. Side note: Bader went 4-4 today with a jack. STL has now won 15 straight.
Yesterday I got an email from a friend of mine about seeing Henry Aaron hitting an opposite field homer at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis that killed the neon lights on the Anheuser Busch eagle way up over the right field stands. I think that he told me that when Cards players hit homers the eagle would flap its wings, but I might have that wrong. It made me think of Aaron's Detroit All-Star game homer where it looked like to me that he place hit it because the wind was blowing out HARD to right field. That was the same game that Reggie Jackson hit the transformer on the roof. If anybody could place hit a homer it would be him.
Going to likely have to beat Max Scherzer in LA. Definitely a tough ask. Bader has played really well down the stretch. Great to see.
Never got to watch him play, but I did get to have a private (10 or so people) dinner with him when I was a kid, and got a few autographs. An experience I’ll never forget. And Z hit number 33 today.
I did get to sit next to Bo Diddley on a flight from Atlanta to Gainesville. We talked about music for half of the flight until he was recognized. Then he went in schtick. I never got around to the question I really wanted to ask: Do you hold any grudge about Buddy Holly stealing your riff for Not Fade Away?
Z had a big standup double late last night against the Sox. Then scored on Kiermaier’s double. Sadly the Rays are out now so only Disco remains for the Gators. Disco takes the mound tonight vs the Dodgers. He has given up 22 runs in 27 innings vs the Dodgers this year. In ALL of his other starts, he has given up 37 ER in 140.2 IP. An ERA of 2.36. Really hoping he solves the hex he has on him vs the Dodgers.
