Gators Summer Baseball Update: July 15 - Florida Gators I realize this is over in the summer league thread but it's great to see Wyatt Langford doing so well and I'm glad he hasn't gone to the portal. He just might have a shot at a starting position somewhere if he keeps hitting like this. Sterling Thompson might end up batting in the 2 or 3 spot this year with these numbers. I get its the Florida Summer League but he continues to show improvement no matter where he goes. Imagine him batting second with a runner on first and the defense puts the shift on. Can you say bunt it down the third base line. I think yes.
That criteria would apply to most of the roster at one time or another. Heck, happened to poor Jud just about every game in one or 2 at bats
Just a couple of years back Jud Fabian was the lead off guy for the first few months. Imagine that after this past year.
You never know how freshmen are going to handle their 1st year playing in college, but the #93 player on the MLB.com draft board, Michael Robertson has the skills and speed to crack the starting lineup in the OF and potentially be a leadoff hitter. Since people are starting to mix together some semblance of a batting order, I figured I'd put out a way too early attempt, based on the assumption no one drafted comes back. No way am I putting much thought or reasoning into this yet, mainly reflecting on last year's stats, the summer numbers we are seeing, and the talent potential of the newcomers. Don't kill the messenger! CF - Michael Robertson LF - Sterlin Thompson C - Mac Guscette DH - Kris Armstrong RF - Kenny Calilao 2B - Colby Halter SS - Josh Rivera 1B - Wyatt Langford 3B - Deric Fabian I certainly think the LHP Caglianone has a chance to play 1st instead of Langford. Anybody that comes back will certainly shuffle the order. I'd rather see Calilao at first but his OF skills might necessitate his attention in RF. Guscette is too slow and not enough power for me batting 3rd but he rarely strikes out and is too good a bat until someone else proves they deserve this important spot in the order. And the unknown is where do you put Lastres. He might be the DH and put Armstrong back at 1st even with the errors.
87— Does Wyatt Langford have any reps under his belt in the outfield? I still kinda get that squirmish feeling on Thompson’s routes and approaches to catching fly balls and would like to see what he looks like at first base with his height and build.
Who knows how it will play out, but it's always fun to speculate. Keep an eye on 3rd year sophomore Tucker Talbott from Jacksonville. He came in as a 2-way player, but was listed on this year's roster as an outfielder. He played at Bishop Kenney in Jax and was a really good hitter and pitcher for them. He hasn't seen the field during the COVID season nor this past year, but we don't have many non-starter position players returning and I'm sure he'll get his shot at earning a starting spot in the fall.
