My parents still refuse to get vaccinated and it saddens me. My family is dealing with more than enough at the moment.

 

Great to see this, not just for the UF connection, but for the bigger picture of arts awareness. Here's a snapshot of one important aspect of the initiative:

 

AP research shows that less than 0.1% of COVID infections and 0.8% of deaths are among the group of fully vaccinated. Vaccines are working incredibly well. Just a shame we cannot get every adult to understand this.

I know too many of these types in my own life, some very close to me. Saddens and angers me in equal measure.

 

It took my Grandpa getting lung cancer for my folks to finally get vaccinated. Better late than never.

 

Pretty good read on Long Covid afflicting a growing number of children in the United States. There are not a lot of numbers to study, and there is far more guesswork than actual science, but small sets of data seem to put the numbers between 7-20% of all children develop Long Covid following infection.

NIH study of 24000 stored blood samples confirmed that SARS-CoV-2 was present in the United States in December of 2019 and almost certainly earlier than that based on data already reported on from California. Somewhere on one of the first few pages of this thread I stated as fact, not guesswork, but fact that this had to be the case.

Nice to read that researchers finally had time to conduct some of the studies.

Adjusted for population size, the US lost about three times as many citizens to covid as Canada did. Also, their economy didn't contract as much as ours. But other than that, DeSantis nails it.

 

DeSantis and FL probably had stellar numbers earlier in the pandemic. They must have done a great job at some points prior. At the moment . . . (rankings are per population).

At least they are near the middle for vaxxing.

 

The latter is the reason for the former. DeSantis is cheered by supporters who never read his orders as to why Florida opened up. Because the vaccines work. Bad yet his base doesn’t get vaccinated and cheers him as a supporter of their freedom to get sick and spread a deadly disease. Well. It is their choice.

 

I am actually ok with this outcome. With the vaccine widely available, and the efficacy numbers clear, it’s effectively a form of natural selection.

Seems kinda shortsighted for GOP to thin the herd in their own ranks. Don’t get me wrong, these people are disgusting. That they know better (or should know better based on education) and yet lie to their audiences to score political points makes them truly vile. But over the long term the human race benefits. So I guess theres’s that “good” aspect.

 

I think that’s because of the large elderly population in FL. Even amongst the Fox News watching seniors, most of them would be smart enough to see through the bs and get the vaccine (just like many seniors already routinely get annual flu and pneumonia shots as a precaution). Though I don’t doubt even among high risk seniors, a decent chunk would be swayed by the right wing and anti-vax misinformation that some right wing media types have brought under their tent.

I bet if we look at the <60 population only, we are closer to Alabama or Mississippi numbers, scraping closer to the the bottom of the barrel.

 

You can blame this all on DeSantis if you want. I know quiet a few people who have not received the vaccine yet. Not one is because of Trump Or DeSantis.

And the biggest group are from ages 17 to mid 20s. None of them care what DeSantis or Trump say.

Why does there always have to be a boogie man invented by the left every time things don’t go as they like? I feel like I’m watching human cartoons the way some of you act.

I have not seen Desantis as an anti-vaxxer. Actually im sure I’ve seen him recommend the vaccine. However he also isn’t exactly forceful at calling out the misinformation BS of people like Tucker and others, and he wasn’t great at handling local mask mandates and other reasonable measures (and I don’t like his stance against the cruise industry). Seems to me he takes positions or fails to be forceful for no other reason than that the misinformation peddlers are seen as somehow useful to him. He has to straddle the line and stay on board with the crazy. Because politics.

You can say that about Trump too. Trump had every opportunity to come out and encourage people to get the vaccine, or even to get the vaccine publicly as an example of leadership. He never did (only recommending begrudgingly at best), yet he SECRETLY got the vaccine himself months before even that info came out.

With Desantis its probably out of some level of political cowardice, as calling out the misinformation would be seen as crossing “the base”. A real leader wouldn’t give a shit about that, they would just do the right thing (as several other Republican governors did). But as we see with some of the crazy laws recently passed in FL, Desantis is the ultimate panderer.

A Pandemic that kills indiscriminately has been politicized and has somehow become less about a scourge of a disease and more about individual "rights"?

What does it say about our society when political operatives turn a deadly disease into partisan politics.

Those arguing about the right to NOT wear a mask:

lets see, the mask Mandates never required anyone to wear it outside of public places. So the anti mask crowd are basically saying they care nothing about the health and safety of others so they play "partisan politics".

How very low and inconsiderate that thought process works.

What you don't hear REPORTED are how all the ASSHOLES that brought death and sickness to their own families, friends and co-workers feel about those decisions today.

For those that made the decision for partisanship or personal narcissism, hows that working out for you?

They know who they are, I wonder after the funerals how "empowered" they feel or felt.............

May be persons on this very board that killed someone, a family member probably, so they could spew partisan nonsense in the time of a pandemic.

 

The rankings for cases, etc. were "highest," as in FL has the 6th most cases in the U.S. Sorry if I was not clear about that. FL is worse than Mississippi & Alabama in cases, hospitalization, and deaths.
