There is also a tradition of compromise in this country. e.g. Tip O'niell/Ronald Reagan and Newt Gingrich/Bill Clinton said hello. Unfortunately it has more recently become a zero sum game in which ultimately we ALL lose.
Oh no, where would we be without compromise on things like empowering the American war machine, welfare reform and and taxes that funneled more money to high earners and gutted the middle class? All the people you invoked made this country much, much worse.
"Compromise" is only between two opposing parties? Passing the ACA with only Democratic votes with a super majority involved a lot of compromise. Likewise, the Trump tax involved the same sort of interparty compromises. Cant think of much legislation passing that doesnt involve horse trading of some sort. Most normal governments you elect a party and if they have enough votes they get to enact their agenda, that's the way it should work! We are stuck with a terrible system that is designed for that not to happen unless you just get massive majorities. And the argument people have for it is "well sometimes it worked when they all agreed to do things like invade Iraq."
There’s a fair number of Republicans who believe in the old saying that the government that governs best is the government that governs least. For those folks they aren’t looking for the Republican version of Democrat ideas or Republican ideas that Democrats kind of like, they’re looking for someone to stop Democrats from implementing the Democrat version of Democrat ideas. Those Republicans want very little when they put Republicans in power other than some tax cuts, some de-reg, and a friendly judiciary, not to see DC come up with some grand new idea of what the government could be doing. I’m not sure how you propose folks representing that idea sit down and hold hands to come up with an “everybody wins” version of what they got sent to DC to stop from happening in the first place.
If you're telling us that obstructing Democrats from implementing any of their agenda is basically the entirety of what Republicans stand for while in the minority and you're cool with that mindset, I see zero reason to keep the filibuster around.
In theory, it is perhaps true that Republican party was initially for less federal govt interference and having problems solved locally. However it appears that government over reach is okay for the Republican's if it supports their religion (church/Christian doctrine), capitalism to the benefit of their cohorts in big business and the MIC, or if it helps in segregation (of those different from them). For the rest of us it is "no soup for you".
Do you vote for elected officials just so that they can personally or collectively obtain power, or do you vote for them because you think they will do what’s right for the country? Their mandate is from the people who elect them.
It seems that you think the only way to get things done is to oppose the other guy at every turn. I disagree with that viewpoint.
If your ideal government is one that doesn’t do much, it’s tough to see how working with the guy saying “well here’s something new the government could do” is going to do more to accomplish that than opposing him would.
Generally, funny and come on man for serious posts are in very poor taste, which, as I type it, isn’t surprising. I’ve blocked the chronic ones as they usually add nothing to the discussion. @wgb isn’t usually one of them.
Less gubmint + no regulation = the thieves can go wild without fear. Saw it up close and personal in my 35+ years in trump's industry. There is no honor system. Liar gonna lie, thief gonna thieve, and a fraudster gonna fraud. I lived in that swamp. And that tool ran on "drain the swamp"? He is the swamp for crying out loud. How so many people refuse to see this is scary to say the least. Why don't we just get rid of the police, they are overburdensome regulation and a socialist organization. While we're at it, let's get rid of the fire departments. If your house burns down, sucks to be you, you're on your own. And, let's get rid of that expensive military. They are just sucking off the gubmint teat. Sheesh.
If you are for less government, lower taxes, and consider yourself conservative, who has a better voting record than Liz Cheney? Anyone? Yet, she was kicked out of a leadership position because?....That's right. Won't bow down and kiss the Don's ring. Shows you where the real QOP priorities are.
Dude must love the movies, because he sure does dig projection. It's really simple. Deflect, project, then attack. As long as there are enough groupies to hang on his jock, to him it works like a champ. Who cares if people get stomped in the process.
