Some people attain power and are humbled by it and exercise it wisely and judiciously for the common good. Most, unfortunately, become more concerned with keeping their power. This is not solely a Republican problem. How do we reverse this? I’m not sure we can because I’m not sure we share the same ideals any longer.

I agree, but I do want to put in a caveat about the nature of the “they” here. I believe that the good right leaning posters on this board do not want people to be banned from voting just for the sake of them not voting. They see these moves by the Republican Party as having a rather honest motive. If true, I don’t see why that wouldn’t also describe the beliefs of some of the actual republican officials that supported these measures. At some point in the chain, I do agree that there must be some people who really are just hoping to limit voting. Hopefully it isn’t many.
"They" also said they weren't at the Capitol on January 6th to overthrow the government so I'm done taking them at their word.
Im talking a little bit less about what is true and instead about what is truly believed. Some people undoubtedly are lying about what they know to be true about the capitol riots. Others honestly believe that those rioters must have been antifa false plants or didn’t break the law or were completely peaceful, etc. It’s frustrating but there are actually people who truly believe demonstrably irrational positions. I am sure that I am one of them, at least in some ways.
At the risk of hijacking the thread, you bring up something I ponder daily without a satisfactory internal conclusion. I just find it inconceivable that people could genuinely believe that January 6 was an Antifa false flag operation, that there is worldwide cabal of child murdering pedophiles, that the November elections was stolen by Joe Biden, etc. At the same time, it's undeniable that plenty of otherwise informed people believe one or all of those, and believe them sincerely. I don't know what to think of that. I can't even reason my way through it. I just say that they must not really believe it but I know that's not the case.
Its a supremely interesting line of inquiry that is relevant to basically all disagreements. There are lines that won’t be crossed, I am pretty sure. Eg Biden can’t say that he can fly and expect his supporters to agree with him. On the other end of the spectrum, if you want evidence that taxes help or hurt society, a click of the mouse will produce mountains of the data you want. I would say that qanon is near the Biden flying part of the spectrum, but it’s small distance away from a simple act of defying physics seems to provide a surprising amount of space for non-evidence backed beliefs. This poll really got to me, not because the belief is so crazy, but because the realitywas so well documented. Poll: GOP doesn't believe Trump talked about Biden to Ukrainians (Note: yes this is a Republican example, but I don’t think any group is immune. It just happens to be the example I know.)
