Not sure if this was posted earlier in this thread, if so, I apologize but thought this worth sharing. Even as the debate over forcing both students and teachers back into classrooms heats up, a small but growing number of doctors and scientists are becoming alarmed over the increase in cases in those under 18 years of age. While deaths are still incredibly low, that number is not zero. Below, another tragic death from an apparently healthy high school senior.

Unfortunately that's pretty much exactly what Biden/Fauci predicted a month ago. I thought it was an exaggeration, but no.

Agree, Western Carolina and eastern TN are both great outings. Anything between Asheville and Gatlinburg are all good stops.

Gatlinburg can be a bit busy for me even in pandemic times. Was there in October but still had a great time. Some seriously cool hiking (Mt Leconte is a top 3 hike) and spectacular cabins there but again the commercial part of it and traffic are a bit much. I’d prefer maybe Bryson City, NC for mountains combined with a good town with food. Cherokee has tons of waterfalls and mountains within 30 mins most are short easy walks. You guys have me counting down til spring.

And keeping kids home has consequences as well. Another tragic suicide from an apparently healthy high school student. I can post more of these if you'd like.

 

As tragic as every death of a child is, regardless of reason, it's not like the pandemic doesn't effect kids at all. If it did, then there wouldn't be a rise in pediatric hospitalizations in places like Arizona, where the virus is still raging out of control. Most of the kids survive, but several have been placed on respirators, and sadly, there have been those who succumbed to the disease.

 

Who said it doesn't affect kids at all? But the cases of kids getting severely sick are few and far between. The flu is much more dangerous to anyone under the age of 18. That is a fact that is forgotten by some on here.

 

Here are some numbers for FLORIDA since October 1st, by age group:

5-14: 0.27% hospitalization rate (159 total hospitalizations), 0 deaths in 57,881 cases
15-24: 0.45% hospitalization rate (583 total hospitalizations), 3 deaths in 129,424 cases (0.0023%)

The numbers are so low, that you have to wonder what is reasonable to expect with normal activities of young people.

Pediatricians are also discouraging parents from having their children tested if they are already in a known COVID environment and displaying symptoms, so the numbers are likely far greater regarding cases that are not being counted.

Bad parenting has consequences. Unacknowledged and untreated mental health problems have consequences. Failing to be willing to admit your child has issues has consequences. Failing to even know that your child has issues because you are so disconnected from your child has consequences.

Yes, times of stress, like a pandemic, highlight all of the flaws.

Funny how all of you righties suddenly "need the village to raise your own children".
