You can scheme around a limited lineman. They were very talented. Usually it is multiple players missing assignments over the course of a game that makes a bad OL. Sometimes that is on the players, but if it is persistent over seasons it is a coaching issue. I expect this is a coaching and culture issue, not limited players.
I agree. This is on Brewster to go in and seal the deal. This is the kind of kids we brought him in for, right?
I highly doubt Smart will have Washington and Gilbert on the field at the same time that will make both happy. I would love to see him on the field at the same time with Jones, Bowman, Zipperer, Shorter and Henderson. That would be so many options to be multiple: touchdown threats, mismatches, blockers, hands.
Exactly. Imo this is exactly what Brewster is here for, and it’s his position. This is Brewster time to shine, seal the deal. Make him understand how he will be a first round pick if he comes here. good grief this would be huge.
Exactly. Plus I see White, Braun, and Eguakun better able to get a push and pull than Gouraige, Heggie, and Reese.
I read initially how UGA was selling Washington’s big Peach bowl game as how they will use the tight end. So I looked up his stats...3 catches for 45 yards. That was his big game. Pitts had a game with 4 tds! 3 catches was a typical quarter for Pitts. Pitts had more touchdowns on the season (12) in 3 less games than Washington had total catches for the entire season (7). Washington was a freshman so they can start slow but Gilbert had 35 catches in 8 games as a true freshman at LSu. Can’t see how georgia looks attractive here. heck, all Georgia tight ends combined for 24 total catches and 2 touchdowns so it wasn’t just Washington. Florida tight ends had 64 catches and 17 touchdowns. if Gilbert chooses to go to Georgia it can have nothing to do with his future in football.
This is a terrible excuse for teams, if you can't have a run game without the QB running then you don't have a real run game.
Interesting that we didn’t seem to go after Keir Thomas hard, I thought he would be a good pick up for us. Wander who else we are looking at for DT ?
I tend to disagree with this. It's part of the game now, and has always been a part of Mullen's game plan. There are a bunch of triple option teams out there that have QBs as the lead rusher and those teams are close to the top in total rushing yardage. They do it to mask deficiencies in other areas, but I wouldn't say they don't have a real run game. A running QB allows other backs to get yards because there is another threat to contain. A "real" run game only works when you have all the necessary parts, and only about 4-5 teams have that.
A running QB may not last the whole season of SEC games, just saying. AR and the two FR QBs better be ready to takeover as when needed.
I hope I’m wrong but I can’t make myself believe EJ makes it through an entire schedule healthy , unless his pass game develops at warp speed. That’s the true down side of playing in the sec for off players, the league is always loaded with pros on defense. How good the league does nationally every year is determined by the crop of coaches at each place but one thing that will never change is the monsters on defense in this league individually. Eventually one is gonna light your ass up. AR’s burst and size may allow him to get through it more healthy. Hope the best for both of them.
running QB’s can last. Tebow and Manziel did and they’re two diff body types. Corral lasted and he was 12th in the SEC in rushing attempts as did Bo Nix, Plumlee (last year), and Kellen Mond. Like you guys pointed out, GOTTA have that threat of your passing so you won’t be getting keyed on and gang tackled. Outside of sacks, those QB’s were being tackled by guys in the secondary unlike Terry Wilson from UK who couldn’t pass so he found running lanes more difficult and more times than not was getting tackled by DL and LB’s. Emory will be a sitting duck if he doesn’t turn it up a notch as a passer. Mullen smarter than all of us but I hope that he reels in Emory’s desire to run and turn him into a passer who CAN run when need be, like how Mond turned into this year (74 carries this season as oppose to 126 and 149 carries the two previous seasons)
