    The thing is, they never would have breached the capital because the riot police would have been out in force from the get go.

    I completely agree. And I’m sure you will agree the rioters this summer who threatened to breach federal buildings in several different cities deserved the same fate, correct?

    I dont think anyone deserves to die at the hands of the cops. And those buildings were empty this summer (not full of people to take hostage or harm), so no its not even the same thing.

    With all the pictures of proud boys, neo nazis and Q, add in the occupation of other state houses by the same groups, looks like antifa, yup.
    Now could antifa have infiltrated like the proud boys did out west, yup, probably. But look at the pictures. These are nut job true believers. A number of elected officials too. It is all a cult who have been brainwashed with propaganda.

    Looked like she was shot by secret service? People who were clearly charged with protection. Their job is to protect whomever was behind those doors, whether that was Pelosi, Pence, McConnell, whomever. They aren’t going to do riot control at that point, to them it was basically a last stand scenario, and I doubt they are even armed or trained with any non lethal weapons in that role. It’s shoot to kill anyone trying to get past them.

    You can partially blame the cops that were on her side (outside the doors) for not getting control of the situation, it was a bizarre scene with a bunch of heavily armed police right there. They could have stopped it. But the woman was warned and kept trying to breech through the glass, thats effectively suicide by cop. I’m honestly amazed the whole thing wasn’t put down from the start with police using force. The outer barricades is one thing, that type of thing happens occasionally, but once they started breaking in that’s a second level
    breech that should clearly be met with lethal force. I was amazed the capitol security in the building basically looked about as effective as mall cops.

    1. Re. the military might--Because we can afford it, thanks to the innovation and productivity which is encouraged by profit motivated private property based free market capitalism;

    2. Re. the incarceration rates--fruits of freedom. Give folks enough rope to hang themselves...or hoist themselves up....you're bound to get a shit pile who opt for the former (i.e.--crime/hanging oneself);

    3. Integral to freedom, is private property rights; integral to PPR, is the need to protect PPR, which means criminalizing violation of others' PPR.

    You take the good with the bad, but our system(s) are grounded in trial and error, human nature, and history.

    Given that there's zero evidence of Antifa and plenty of evidence of Trump supporters, I'm going with the Trump supporters.

    The last time the Capital was stormed and taken was 1814 by British soldiers. Frankly, to me, this was no different. The military should have immediately been deployed and the invaders terminated with extreme force.

    There was no way to know what these (people) had on their minds. What if ANTIFA did infiltrate? What if Iranian operatives bent on abducting a congressman or woman had infiltrated? What if the FSB had infiltrated on behalf of Trump bent on assassination of Democrat congressmen or women??

    There was literally no way for anyone in security or law enforcement to know any of that as these people stormed the halls of congress.

    I am extremely disappointed that security forces did not defend our government with the deadliest of force. This is an EPIC fail and certainly an invitation for terror groups around the world to do the same EXACT thing in the future.

    So your version of 'freedom' is that we have to put more people in prison and make them unfree & dominate the world through economic power sustained by force of arms. But you get an iPhone that you are allowed to kill someone over if they try to take it. And this is what you say is morally superior to communism in every way?

    If she were a Black woman in the same situation who was a Democrat storming the Capitol after two Republicans won the Georgia Senate seats, buildings throughout the country would be burning right now and everyone here would be crying systemic racism.

    They'd be characterizing the riots as "the language of the unheard," not a domestic terror attack.

    I oppose both, but the double standard everywhere, especially in the media, is astounding.

    Yeah, this is so lame. Most of them didn't wear masks, the woman who died's social media is already out there, full of Qanon and Trump stuff. Plenty of well-known right wing figures were seen, identified and involved too. These people didn't seem worried about hiding their identities lol.

    There is 4+ years worth of MAGA violence that you must completely ignore to make such a claim, sorta bookended by Charlottesville and yesterday (though their violence preceded C-ville). So no, not "remarkably clean and peaceful"

    The difference with antifa and social justice protests is that their goals aren't to tear down society, they are reactions to a racist societal structure. MAGA is a contrived victimhood of people who ostensibly claim it's about economics but history has shown us it's about maintaining their station in a racial hierarchy. Or another way to put it, it's about the fear of losing their influence relative to blacks and other minorities.

    Right. That was my take.

    Basically all the people who stormed the building, could have justifiably been shot the minute they broke through the glass. If you are breaking into an area where people are holed up, or there is security, there’s no doubt you are doing that at your own peril.

    But in light of all the people who broke in and did a casual stroll around the house and senate floor -as well as other secure areas, that woman probably didnt have to die. Particularly with all the cops right there on the outside of the door. The woman was clearly deranged, but those cops were right there on the outside. What were they even doing? Now if those cops weren’t literally right there, then there would be no doubt the shooting was not only justified, but necessary.

    Y'all make fair points.

    Perhaps my reaction was a tad guided by the video posted upthread, which captured and isolated the shooting itself.

    ...so ok...context here does mitigate.

    (but it's still brutal and tragic).

    I just want to put on the record that after reading some of the overnight and morning comments, I am trying VERY HARD to follow forum rules.

    As my momma said: If you can't say something nice, sometimes it's best not to say anything at all.

    On Fox Trey Gowdy blasting Trump while trying not to say his name.
    ....I don’t blame the cops, when they tell 10,000 people the election was stolen, to fight Mike Pence and the cowardly pubs, we need to march there and fight.....

    Insurrection a stunning show of force for conspiracy groups, extremists and fringe movements - CNN

    One of the most recognizable figures in the videos and photos of the chaos on Capitol Hill was a man in his 30s with a painted face, fur hat and a helmet with horns.
    The protester, Jake Angeli -- known by followers as the QAnon Shaman -- quickly became a symbol of the bizarre and frightening spectacle as photos circulated of him roaming the Capitol halls holding an American flag affixed to a spear in one hand and a bullhorn in the other, and even standing shirtless atop the Senate dais.

    The rioters who filled the Capitol also included Nick Ochs, the founder of Proud Boys Hawaii, a chapter of the far-right group. "Hello from the Capital lol," Ochs tweeted Wednesday, with a selfie of himself smoking a cigarette in the building.

    One of the most widely shared photos from the chaos showed Richard "Bigo" Barnett, the leader of a pro-gun rights group in Gravette, Arkansas, lounging in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office with his feet up on a desk.
