After a day’s worth off ranting we’ve still got a greater percentage of our population dying than 90% of the civilized world. It’s amazing what lengths folks will go to in an effort to defend a failed response.

Serious question. Why are you just using the last two lines? Wouldn't his claim of seniors include at last three lines or roughly 140K? The number drops to 15K under 55.
Why are you just using the bottom two lines?

I think most of us are OK admitting Trump failed. I know I am. I think the argument here is going forward, and should such a low impact on children be enough to shut the schools down?

Let’s say we can go back in our time machine to March or April and use the defense production act to produce materials like N95 masks and face shields in massive numbers to provide to students, teachers and other essential workers.

Lets say that today we were seriously pushing mask wearing in the community to reduce the amount of infection in the community so you’d have less out there to spread at school.

Let’s say we also put way more effort into establishing better faster testing and tracing.

I think there was and remains a path forward to more safely open schools. That path isn’t taking almost all your chips and placing a bet on a vaccine.

The vaccine is absolutely the long term solution. The date at which it is effectively rolled out to the masses is unknown but the CDC says next summer. There needs to be more done now.

I think darn near everyone wants schools open, but many want more done to keep people safe in the process.

Agree with most of what you said. Just awful leadership from the top down. I think the biggest mistakes made by the US were:
    1. Failure to Isolate the elderly and sick to the best of our ability(we did awful with this).
    2. Produce our own reliable test early.
    3. Have enough PPE for hospitals and nursing homes at least.

At 15,000 deaths of Americans under age 55, that still puts COVID-19 in the top 5 or 6 leading causes for this age range. How many more would have died had we not taken shut down precautions? Another 10,000? 15,000? Hard to say.

In addition, death isn't the only factor. There are still serious, long-term health effects of contracting COVID-19. We don't know the true impact on long-term health on quality and quantity of life for those who recover. But we do know many people still suffer the effects of the disease weeks, even months after recovering.

Any analysis of the impact needs to include more than the death total.

It needs to include damage to the heart, lungs, kidney and other internal organs. Just recovering doesn't mean a person was not impacted, perhaps severely for life, by this virus.

We know that these impacts are occurring, but we are so preoccupied with deaths as the measuring stick we do not appear to be even trying to evaluate these long term injuries.

(edit) @AzCatFan beat me to the punch on my point here, but it is very serious and appears to be going almost completely overlooked. Not even any discussion I am aware of for evaluating long term impacts to known survivors.

As long as we also include the economic impact that will include increased deaths from poverty, from suicide, drug and alcohol abuse as well as increased deaths because Alzheimer’s and dementia patients didn’t get the care they needed as well.

The poster in post # 18038 gave 3 examples of deaths that were 76, 84, and 91 so I utilized those age groups 74-84 and 84+. Since retirement age falls in the middle of the next younger range, one might not consider them to be too senior. The poster did not mention elderly until #18096 perhaps trying to move the goalposts to save some face.

Former Nashville councilman Tony Tenpenny dies from COVID-19 complications

Former Nashville Council Member Tony Tenpenny has died due to complications from COVID-19, Vice Mayor Jim Shulman confirmed Sunday.

Tenpenny was hospitalized for more than a month at one of the St. Thomas hospitals and was placed on a ventilator earlier in September. He died overnight, Shulman said on Sunday afternoon...
    ..............................................................................................

I do not post to mock his death. I feel sadness that he died and pity that he bought into the type of malicious ignorance propagated by this administration. It pisses me the eff off. And yes, I blame Trump. And no it's not TDS. If from day one Trump hammered home the seriousness & danger of covid and didn't lie and call it a hoax, his followers and the less informed among us might have reacted in a much more rational and safe way rather than becoming an adversarial contingent bent on dying on the hill for a misguided cause and making it more dangerous for the rest of us.

I don't think there's an easy answer. Shutting the schools down harms kids and parents. But having in-person learning puts teachers, parents, and other family members at risk. The best idea I have is to have in-person learning with appropriate precautions to maximize social distancing and robust testing. If cases start to really rise, go virtual for a period of time to let things cool off.

`A BS narrative is the unsupported babble you put forth that there were actually 50-60+ deaths. The chart you posted totals nearly 200K deaths. That is rich. You proved yourself totally incorrect right there. You posted three death certificates and I used those age groups to show how ridiculous your statement actually was. Now as a diversion from your inane position you decide to go with "stay locked down, new cases, definition of elderly..... moving those goalposts away from your original unverified, conspiracy requiring, uneducated guess. Try red herring spin with someone else... you claimed 50-60k deaths and I proved demonstrably with your chart that it was 100% wrong. Quit embarrassing yourself, when you're wrong , you're wrong. PS brush up on charts before next time.

I do take joy in showing up the Coronabros. I mean why only 200k Covid deaths, let’s call all 2020 deaths Covid. About as reliable as the BS 200k number you keep fawning over. But hey, if you believe in fantasy land, head to Disney, but I’m sure you will be hiding in your basement until there’s a vaccine. Good luck with that.

More recent sad news about teachers.

47yr old WI teacher dies from coronavirus - Wisconsin teacher who died with COVID planned to keep teaching on Zoom

Para in Volusia Co. Florida (not certain about age) dies; one day later, her brother (age 51) is also laid to rest - Volusia school coronavirus death: Port Orange teaching assistant dies

There are 7 or 8 teachers who have died from the virus, though they may have have contracted it outside of school. The truth is, though, teachers have died and will continue to. Almost all were under 55.

It’s so easy to tell who is from 247. They think they know it all and won’t admit they are wrong. Game is tied but I’m sure you are watching MSNBC LOL. Good luck with that. Sorry about schools being open and football happening. Must suck being miserable all the time.
