Orange county, where I live now, is trending down because we have a mask mandate. It is one of the keys to getting our economy back on track. Now we will shove kids into a classroom and see it spike again. If we had a real leader (ANY of our past presidents) we would have shut down sooner, stayed shut a little longer and had widespread testing and tracing. His own admin is saying that if we had a nationwide mask mandate, we'd be on the other side of this in just 4-6 weeks. It's downright embarrassing that we are the worst country at responding to this virus. SMDH.
I am not a anti-mask guy. Even if they do not work (obliviously the hot topic), if it makes other feel safe in public, why not put it on? With that said, plenty of other areas that have had mask mandates with still a increase in cases. Look at California... Newsom ordered state wide mask mandate June 18th. I am not convinced mask are working like we hoped they would. All it takes is one adult in the family to get the virus, go home (where no one has mask on) and spread it to the entire family.
Yes, the mask mandate is only one part or facet of a successful plan; we should and could be doing so much more.
well I think the idea for any virus is slow the spread the best you can. We were never going to stop it dead in it’s tracks. I was ok with the initial lock downs as it gave us time to learn more about the virus. That paid off imo. I don’t think lockdowns are necessary. If your older or immune compromised, stay isolated. Otherwise most of us will beat the thing with very little issues. Mask I hope at least slow the spread in that we keep our hospital system from being overwhelmed. Good news is we got past the surge. I personally still think the mass protest in June was a big spreader.
Masks are not nearly as powerful at stopping the spread of the virus as “lockdowns” or social distancing. The only way to be 100% sure is to not come into contact with the virus. Unfortunately almost nobody can achieve 100%, lockdowns push far more people in that direction. Though essential workers, and non-compliance would still be more than half the population - the idea is to get as many people as close to 0% exposure as possible, which also lowers the risk for essential healthcare workers. If they deal with 100 infected people a day that is far riskier to them than dealing with 10 infected per day. Masks only bend the odds in your favor should you have incidental contact with the virus. The weakest single layer cloth masks they estimate as 10% effective, not great by any stretch, but that is still 10% in your favor. The better triple layer or surgical masks can be 30-50%. Combined with common sense (not going to anywhere with indoor crowds) this would drastically improve a persons odds. N95 would obviously be far better protection (99%), but this level of protection is mostly for those who face the virus on a consistent basis (and if you’ve ever worn an n95 you know they are not pleasant, a surgical mask or cloth is basically nothing by comparison).
I'd agree that it was, as was any mass gathering, including rallies (now proven); and somehow we still have these known spreading events all over the place... essentially shooting ourselves in the foot over and over, and delaying the safe opening everybody wants.
I think the biggest problem is younger people. I know myself when i was in my teens and twenties, I felt like nothing could ever hurt me. I am worried about High School kids going back to school. Not for the kids but if there are parents that are high risk.
Fun fact: When you shoot coyotes the females in the area start having bigger litters and the problems just gets worse.
What is happening to California? they never fully opened before lock downs went back into full affect (LA) and yet still had a huge spike. Its also no secret the damage done by lock downs far beyond even just the economy. Drug and child abuse way up. Over 40% of students either just logged into virtual learning and didn't pay attention at all or didn't even log in. All the while the best plan is to protect the one who we KNOW are high risk. Its so damn obvious. Anyone under the age of 65 can virtually treat this thing like the flu.

the litter size for bears is often correlated to the amount of food mom has available too. It’s a fairly common thing for mammals.
Wow, poor teachers; hope they have some quality masks and safety measures in place, because that looks like a disaster waiting to happen.
