Yeah, that was a smart move. Who could have seen this coming: After reports of multiple positives, WWE to perform coronavirus tests ahead of 'all TV productions'
This is obviously wrong since no one is suggesting it’s this high but...Why isn’t the mortality rate more accurately reflected by (Deaths) / (deaths + recovered) ? Seems as if most people aren’t resolved you have to count the mortality in cases that are cured or have died. That would be an 8% mortality rate which is what we see in earlier peaking states.
Updated stats from world o meter as of 8 am EDT. There were 16 states with a decrease in active cases. NY and NJ are consistently dropping the number of active cases every day. There were 8 states with just 1-2 deaths and 7 states with 0 deaths.
Not shutting down will be worse. As it is now. Because we will not reopen and recover robustly. Again, you are ignoring what is happening in the rest of the world. We are just doubling down on Failure, the Costs of which will continue.
I hit the Salmon and Halibut run there a few years ago with my son. My boys both eat fish, I swear halibut seemed like they were designed for consumption. Great filet yield. I was Delta Diamond back then and we were allowed to have 2 pieces of luggage per person so we flew a bunch of fish back for free. We did not get as many halibut as you, but some good salmon and ling cod (i believe they were called).
Mathematically yes. The problem is in collecting data. Many of the people who test positive have few enough symptoms that they don't continue to engage with the medical community and recover without reporting that information to anyone.
The information for recovered cases is probably the least accurate of all because of what philnotfil said.
That’s because the denominator is growing rapidly right? Dying trails infections so it likely will start going back up mathematically as the spreading slows again.
And you keep ignoring that we are not the rest of the world. Shut down now? Cases are already plateauing. 7-day moving average has dropped in the past week. 32% drop in GDP wasn't enough, huh? We need to wreck that economy more? Cases plateauing, death rate clearly much lower than previously thought, vaccine possible before end of the year makes another shut down a really bad idea. 50 out of 50 governors agree. Time to accept reality.
What other countries have had a 32% drop in GDP? Are there any other developed countries that have taken a bigger hit to GDP?
Can't find a published list of contractions. Looks like China was +2% and Germany was -10% for the second quarter. Will keep my ears up.
I don't believe the China number, but the Germany number is an indication that we didn't have to lose 30% of our GDP because of this virus.
I think you draw the line where it needs to be drawn in order to quash this thing. We should have enough smart people in charge to be able to examine places that effectively managed. And we might not be able to do exactly what they did, but should try to get as close as possible. If you were told that you had to make some difficult sacrifices for three weeks in order to get to the other side of this thing, would you do it? You probably would, because you're reasonable. Unfortunately, too many Americans appear not to be reasonable and still think the virus is a hoax that will disappear after the election. How many times have we read posters who wrote "stay home and hide in your basement if you wish. I'm going to enjoy my life"? IMO, we have to get past that irresponsible mentality to find the place where we draw the line.
Other places took this virus seriously from the get-go. They set up country-wide testing and implemented contact tracing ability from day one. They also didn't have their country's leader call the response to the virus a hoax, say it we had it under control, and one day, it would just magically disappear. Even with this, we were successful at flattening the curve through May. But people got impatient and wanted to liberate their states...and again, our President supported this too. And the results speak for themselves. Had we reopened much slowly, actually followed CDC guidelines, we'd be in a better place than we are today. Same had we actually followed the Pandemic Guideline that was created, instead of the Trump administration thinking it knows best about everything and never needs any help.
Back to the question about how far we should go . . . and sorry that I keep harping on this, but the contrast is so telling. Taiwan had 447 cases and seven fatalities one month ago (it was six in late April). They now sit at 467 and still only seven fatalities. What coronavirus success of Taiwan and Iceland has in common Consider the strategic nature of their early virus response: Does this sound anything like what we are experiencing in the U.S.? Cooperation - nope. Partnering - no damn way.
We did a full day halibut only so we could throw the small ones back and try and get a big one each. When you do the combo trips the halibut you get are usually smaller because you don't have time to sort through the smaller ones. One of the upsides of first class tickets is 2 free luggage up to 75 lbs. Bonus was Delta was repositioning some planes so we got lie flat seats for the redeye from ANC to ATL. Lot of availability this year so I used miles for tickets in first for the family on the return so no charges for those 3 big boxes that were all north of 50 lbs. Ling cod is correct but out of season and not as tasty to us. Those are one ugly prehistoric looking fish but fun to catch. Fortunately we have figured out how to get our salmon from shore most years depending on the run timing and strength of run. Snagging isn't very sportsmanlike but much more productive and we were fishing to eat, not for sport. It is allowed in certain areas where the run is hatchery based. We could snag 6 sockeye each (son and I, too much work for wife and daughter) at the head of Resurrection Bay and then drive over to the Kenai River and get three each there fishing from shore. Have to use a "fly" and snag them in the mouth on the Kenai (freshwater) where you can use a weighted treble hook to snag them anywhere in saltwater at Resurrection Bay. There were seals and river otters that would hang out and wait on someone to snag a fish in the bay and then try and take it from you while you fought to get it in and black bears that would wander the beaches at times looking for salmon to steal from a stringer.
Have you ever been over to Quinhagak, Alaska on the Kanektok River? My dad and brother have a cabin there are go salmon fishing a couple times a year (until this year). I have been twice, pretty remote but the fishing is great. King Salmon in June and Silvers in August.
I’ll leave this here. Study finds higher viral load in young children, raising questions about how likely they are to transmit the coronavirus
