Quite a few stroke survivors younger than 55 on these boards who are at serious risk; some significantly younger.

Additionally, they're literally discovering new adverse effects every other day; we don't have a clue what will or can happen to someone long-term.

Noticing that the northeastern states are not even seeing 1/10th of the spread the southern states are. I doubt they're being 10 times more cautious up in the northeast. This thing peaks and then the numbers fall off. We're mainly seeing spread in areas now that were not hard hit before.

Well 960 deaths today and over 61k cases.
Last Thursday it was 687 deaths. Four straight days of increased over last week.

Now it’s just a question of how big the death spike is and how long it lasts.

seems to me the benchmark for how we are doing in deaths is 1,000. been under that for 34 out of the last 35 days, looks like texas and california, as well as florida, are going up.

Your benchmark last week was the 30 day or June 1 moving average, can’t remember which.

Now it’s an arbitrary number because we crossed that?

And when/if we cross 1k, what then?

I have no idea whether this is the top, next week is, or we are weeks away, we will all see. But it was clear cases would go up when we opened, and also clear deaths would follow to some degree. Now we all have to wait and see how bad it does or doesn’t get. One thing is sure, had we had even an ounce of national discipline and commitment we wouldn’t be in this mess right now.

Located a new waterfall today. Just a short hike in to Caribou falls - as dramatic or more so than the one I posted a while back. Sharing this one with hiking aficionado @oragator1.

Maybe northerners are not stupid enough to throw Petri Dish Parties. In Tuscaloosa, they are that stupid.

Alabama coronavirus parties offer payouts for those who get infected, official says - CNN

So, to you, 999 deaths is good, and 1000 deaths is bad? Isn't that a fairly arbitrary line?

I think you need, for lack of a better phrase, a line of demarcation.if I use 1,000 as that line, which we have been under every day for the past 5 weeks, and in 2-4 weeks with the rise in cases we are still under that line, it means that we have gotten better at helping those who are hospitalized, and maybe the strain has weakened, still able to infect, but much weaker.people use arbitrary numbers all the time, we passed 2 million cases, passed 3 million. passed 100,000 deaths, passed 130,000, you need something to compare the past to now and the future,

That is a cute, narrow-minded thought, that northerners are just 20 times smarter than southerners, but there are idiots everywhere. What seems much more plausible is that the virus ran through its pool of most vulnerable hosts in the northeast and is having a lot more trouble spreading there and is now proliferating in the south where are still quite a few vulnerable hosts (for now). We'll see it fizzle out there too.

It goes deeper than that. Look at the states where cases are increasing at the highest level. Look at the states where cases are moderate or increasing at a lesser level. Then look at intelligence rates in those states. There is a connection.

It's not intelligence. It's leadership. I can assure you that people in Illinois are not 10 times smarter than people in Florida. But our governor is definitely smarter than Desantis.

Just being twice as cautious could account for 1/10th the spread of what a few southern states are experiencing. Those states had real shutdowns, stayed shutdown and had very gradual re-openings. Don't know about all the southern states but Florida never really shut down and never mandated masks in public.

Overall, the US has failed its citizens and humiliated ourselves on the global stage.
