not that much larger, not even close.

The EU has 70M or so more people than the US. They live much closer together and use much more public transit. How can anybody try and defend what is happening here under this lack of leadership?

Nothing to do with mother nature, everything to do with lack of leadership

I was interested in what the latest three day interval would show, given the holiday weekend. There was some concern that numbers would increase due to lower levels of reporting Friday through Sunday. Keep in mind, this is not yet the impact of July 4 celebrations. Here are the the three day increases:

    Date.......world cases.....world deaths.....U.S. cases.....U.S. deaths
    May3........255,940............14,061...............93,006...........4,731
    May6........258,072............16,907...............75,063...........6,212

Cases are WAY up, with the largest sum during the data period. This is true for the U.S. and worldwide. World fatalities appear to be increasing, as are U.S. fatalities. The next couple weeks (as we keep on saying) will be increasingly telling, as fatalities lag behind case rates.

It is a dangerous and out of control virus, but clearly one we could have managed far better than we have, as countries around the world have shown us. This is a combination of massive failure in political leadership and too many foolish Americans. America is Dunning Kruger.

Updated stats from world o meter as of 8 am EDT. There were 13 states with a decrease in active cases, including NY and NJ. There were 9 states with 1-2 deaths and 8 states with 0 deaths.

The death rate per reported case continues to fall, it has dropped 48 of the last 49 days.

I think your point actually implies the opposite. If our economy is so large and so great it should be better equipped to handle a shutdown. A smaller economy is, by nature, more fragile.

Absolutely it does. But that doesn't change the fact that we should be better equipped to handle any kind of shutdown compared to a smaller economy. Literal Economy of Scale.

Shutting down the economy again at this stage would be a stupid, stupid idea. We're making huge gains in death rate and one would only have to assume that will continue as doctors get more acquainted with the virus. The other issue is that so many people have the virus now that a shut down of the economy isn't going to stop the spread. It didn't last time and we had fewer people infected. Please stop talking about shutting down our economy again. It is a dumb, dumb idea.. for a multitude of reasons.

For the 0.01th time, Covid is a hoax!!

In fairness, that was not one of the SAT questions that Trump studied so hard for.

The people will themselves shut the economy once they see the emergency rooms overflowing and counties and cities start burying people in mass graves by the dozens or hundreds. Unfortunately it seems for some, that is what it takes to wake up.

It’s probably economically wise to get on top of things before it gets to that point. The worse the virus spreads the farther away from economic normalcy we get.

I'd vote for Michael Scott over Trump all day. At least he bumbled his way to running a successful branch.
