We are clearly looking at different data, but you (along with others) are only obfuscating the obvious. If your actual chances of dying from Covid this entire time have been 0.005% (and that's not even factoring in the age effects), then the panic would seem to be a bit overblown, would it not?
Also, in the last 3 years, I have had to "write" multiple letters to keep foreigners in the country. Typically I receive a pre written letter from a lawyer that I can edit &/or sign. I had never had to do this prior.
A lot will depend on the wording here. Frankly, demand from overseas to get into the US amongst students not already here has collapsed. To many overseas, we are becoming a leper colony. They will be more than happy not to be in the US if they can avoid it while still actually engaging in their studies. But yeah, if we slice a huge chunk off of sciences and medicine by not considering access to labs as in-person classes and such, then we are in big trouble. And I have little confidence in the Trump folks to actually administer a policy intelligently rather than utilize it as a way to twist arms to make people do things that are unsafe but economically advantageous in the short-run.
We are literally pursuing a strategy of purging the elites from our country. Suck on it China. You'll have all the elites & we'll be making washing machines to export to you. #winning.
Sure. Generally speaking, are you overcome with fear about activities that carry a 0.005% chance of death? Which is probably way less considering the number doesn't strip out the over 65 population and doesn't factor in unconfirmed cases which the CDC is telling us are about 10x the amount of confirmed on the books.
How Dangerous is Lightning?. Odds of Becoming a Lightning Victim (based on averages for 2009-2018) Estimated U.S. population as of 2019 330,000,000 Average Number of Deaths Reported 27 Estimated number of Injuries 243 Total 270 Odds of being struck in a given year (estimated total deaths + estimated injuries) 1/1,222,000 Odds of being struck in your lifetime (Est. 80 years) 1/15,300 Odds you will be affected by someone struck (10 people for every 1 struck) 1/1,530 I'm not obfuscating anything. I'm telling you that your original analogy about lightning strikes was dumb, and it still is. That's it. I'm not arguing against my chances of dying by COVID.
If so many people don’t want to come to the US then why do we have people lined up at the border trying to come here? Fail...
Absolutely. We can't out-produce those other countries, and probably don't want to try given how much ecological damage they do to themselves. At least until there is a 3D printer in every home, then it will be moot. No, our advantage has always been our rapid innovation and the freedom to pursue just about any avenue if you can find the funding. To do that, we've always plucked the best minds from around the world. Now we seem to be throwing it all away? And it's not just this ICE decision, it's a pattern of baseless xenophobia.
The people lined up at the border (who aren't currently lining up in large numbers, BTW) aren't coming here to go to Harvard or Stanford... We are discussing student visas and the issues related to them. Try to keep up next time.
It would actually be lower if we stripped out the 65+ population and assumed the scientists at the CDC the media is complaining about not being able to hear from are correct. The actual chance of death for a healthy 40 year old approaches...
With this administration and some of its supporters, we will try to find our World niche in the making And distribution of confederate flags.
Where did you see me say that I would like to move to Europe? I may end up retiring there (my wife is a dual citizen of the US & Germany) but the US is my home and I love my country.
