I think everyone is a bit, over excited perhaps these days, both good and bad. Everyone knows that relative to 1500+ deaths per day getting down to 700-800 to a POSITIVE. It is not the END of the story, but there is nothing wrong with acknowledging milestones of progress along the journey to the ultimate outcome that we want. Putting this further into context, I do not see anyone on any message boards crying out about deaths by heart disease as the "national emergency" that it truly is. Yet, every 37 seconds an American dies of heart disease. 1800 per day or over 640,000 per year. Now, does that mean that the 700-800 dying per day from Covid-19 are somehow less important? No, of course not, because they are PEOPLE not numbers. Worse yet, there are steps that we can all easily take right now that would greatly reduce that number further. EASY steps we can take if we would eliminate our arrogance and selfishness. But, let us also not down play the incredible work that medical personnel, research scientists, Pharma companies, etc....have all done under incredibly difficult circumstances to reduce the number that die and we should both acknowledge that and be happy for that. At the same time, we should not be satisfied and become complacent because over 700-800 PEOPLE a day are dying due to things we can all help to mitigate.......just some other guys opinion.
Would significant have been a better word? How many different ways can a person die? @gator95 you marked this post incorrectly, something must be off on your algorithm, please correct it, THANKS!
significant is more appropriate than large although it would be parsing words to try and describe it perfectly
You are correct. See the graph above for my point. We both got hit. They got hit harder and have made much, much more progress. They have their problem under greater control. They did previously experience much worse problems than us. Very true as well.
That's an insightful contribution. As others have mentioned, when COVID-19 is the leading cause of death in the world for 2020 and it can be mitigated by coordinated community action, 10% is large. This is nuts.
Maybe there are better ways to verbalize it, but I think in this forum, in context we can all have a bit of leeway. You would never tell a grieving family that their loved one was "just" or a "good" number. But I think that in this unique once in a lifetime time that we are living in, we need some encouragement and hope. Improving numbers in certain areas provide that and may encourage folks to continue fighting and working together a bit longer. Not sure what the perfect verbiage is, but 500 is much lower than 2000 and numerically that is a "good" thing.
What makes them idiots? Now wearing a mask? Congregating without precautions? I know a lot of people, both young and old, left and right who do both. Curious?
Not that I do not get your point, I do and I agree with you, but why were Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia not included in the graph and why include places like Andorra, Monaco and San Marino? Officially, the US has 330M people. The 29 member nations of the EU have 440M, so nearly 100M more people. But, if we are really comparing government response by similar largely population bases isn't a United States vs E.U. a better comparison? Just curious?
Anybody who willingly marches to their own death without coercion seems rather ignorant, imho; just watching all those folks milling around the place right now is an outbreak waiting to happen... almost NOBODY is wearing a mask, even the obviously infirm. The real tragedy won't come from these folks Auto-Darwinizing; the real tragedy will come in about a month when the first non-attendee fatality becomes a reality.
Czechia is there (listed as Czech Republic). It looks like they chose continental Western and Central Europe (no UK, no Ireland, no Norway or Sweden). That would be why no Eastern European countries. I think testing in many Eastern European countries is pretty iffy.
Both. And they are all idiots (left, right, young, old). Wear masks, socially distance, & keep your hands clean. It's very simple.
