On the topic of how we describe the numbers... (this is opinion) This is what Trump wants. According to the group the administration was regularly quoting for forecasts, we are headed to 200,000 dead citizens by Halloween. Trump wants 719 deaths to become “just” in the American consciousness. They’ve (broadly but not totally) stopped talking about it and have moved on. He wants to hold rallies that go against CDC guidelines and recommendations. He wants to get on with his life and satisfy his needs. He needs us to think 719 is “just”. The more reasonable of the conservatives on this board recognize the ring of truth in that speculation. I’ll acknowledge I’m drawing conclusions and not stating facts. You should acknowledge that Trump constantly displays self interest and my conclusions might have merit.
It may be your opinion, but it’ll be pretty hard to refute. When we were warned of a second wave in the Fall, I believe that was with the assumption that shelter in place then warm weather would basically end the virus. Instead, we’ve basically leveled off a little below our peak and warm weather seems to have no impact on it. Fall will be an uptick again, logically it would have to be, but the starting point will likely be around 1,000 deaths a day rather than zero. Yeah, 719 does sound pretty appealing in that context. We will definitely have to get used to that just being normal.
Not surprising. When the governor loosened restrictions, a lot of people here heard "Everything is back to normal".
There is an uptick now in most states except New York, New Jersey, Michigan. What did they do differently? Not hard to understand. They can open with cases low now.
Our high school (7A) started up practice for certain sports last week. Shut down football practice yesterday after a couple of Covid cases were found. I hope it is just a few cases
Of course. But that is not what he meant and you know that. We have all seen hurricane footage and said something like "it's a miracle only 2 people were killed when that Home Depot collapsed." It isn't some morbid celebration of loss. It is a contextual realization that it could have been worse. The numbers coming down are of little consolation to those grieving but to the millions not, it is a movement forward. These are blunt conversations, but all of us recognize the pain and hurt.
Somewhere between his point and yours is the problem. Normalizing massive death is a problem and I believe the aim of the administration. They want to violate CDC guidelines and hold rallies and act as if nothing is wrong. They need 719 to be "just". Saying just isn't an active act of malice. Saying just does further the problem of normalizing a situation the leadership is increasingly ignoring for self interest.
I agree with this. I know that buckeye is just trying to be positive but it bothers the hell out of me when 500 people dying is "a good day" and 719 is "just".
somewhere around 7,600 people die everyday in the US. It’s a fact of life that death will occur. When deaths keep dropping because of COVID-19, that’s a good thing.
I use the word friend loosely sometimes. We are all owners here. We get together and socialize at sunset. Acquaintance might be the better description, since I don’t do anything with them outside of that. They are good dudes though.
When deaths drop far slower than say, all of western Europe, it is just poor leadership. Western Europe was having more deaths by a wide margin. They now are reporting less than half the daily deaths of the US. They got their problem under control. We just have not done as good a job. It is just pathetic that our leadership violates CDC guidelines to get Trump his fix of worship in Tulsa and without a care for the unmasked breathing all over each other while chanting. It is just typical for this administration. The tweeter in chief is just a narcissistic creature that needs 719 to be just.
Some people are just looking for a fight and an opening to put negativity into every post of someone they don’t agree with. SMDH
So Covid represents roughly 10% of all daily deaths in the US. With all the way someone can die, that seems like a large slice of the pie, does it not?
"Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale told Fox News on Friday that he would probably wear a mask to the rally, while White House spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany told reporters she would not. Trump has eschewed wearing a mask in public.". Trump delights supporters, alarms health officials with Tulsa rally 19,000 tickets and over a million ticket requests... to line up and march into the most virus-laden environment created thus far... unprotected... this is like some bizarro-world way to earn your Stoopidity Stripes.
