Hotels staffed with nursing care to create covid isolation units was the thought. Many countries are creating isolation wards out of hotels or other short term rental facilities

The problem in New York was also the shortage of staff, which is why we needed a military response.

well the spineless alachua county commision is at it again, earlier today they voted to end the mandatory wearing of masks, later they reversed and said you have to, one idiot commisioner said " every day the state and national governments are activelly trying to kill people", what a crock of you know what, that women is a moron, trying to invoke fear for no reason.

funny thing, there is no penalty for disobidience, and sherriff darnell said no one would be cited, so wtf is the rule going to do if i say, screw it, i am not wearing a mask, plain and simple posturing on their part.

i must apoliogize to the county commision, it was a gainesville city commisioner who said the state and federal government was trying to kill people on purpose, still a reprehensable comment by a elected official, she should, imo, resign immediatly, she, if she believes that, is not fit to serve.

Wondering if it's more or less as reprehensible as the impeachedpotus commenting publicly that Joe Scarborough should be re-investigated in a murder cold-case?

you know the thing I find most funny about the whole mask wearing thing? so many people think if I do not wear a mask I am going to infect them, cause them to get sick, maybe die, maybe infect their family, yet every 20-30 minutes they have to remove their mask to smoke a cigarette.what about exposing me and others to 2nd hand smoke, oh no, they will do what they want, much more afraid of covid19 than getting cancer, yet I am a horrible person for not wearing a mask, any thoughts about those selfish people?

I think NYC didn't realize it until it was way too late, unfortunately. Remember this thing spreads at least for weeks before the deaths start hitting. People don't die in 2 days. They typically don't even get sick for 7-14 days, and then the worst cases might take another 2 weeks on a ventilator if they get treated (maybe some die during that 7-14 day window if they don't get put on a ventilator, but generally getting put on a ventilator delays death by another week or two). The spread must have been super fast there due to the density, tourists, public transit, cold weather, etc. They basically had every factor at the absolute maximum level to spread the virus.

While you can give some credit to Newsome for being aggressive in saving lives, I don't think it's coincidence that areas with shittier public transit systems had far less spread of virus. Cali is more spread out with limited public transit and also has better air and weather. Just like Texas. Just like Florida. NYC subways would typically be packed with people, underground with bad air. It's a veritable virus incubator. I'm not buying any "it was circulating in December" nonsense, in NYC it really started in February and people started dying (in numbers) in March. Just look at the timeline everywhere it was hitting hard. Italy had 6 deaths Febuary 24th. March 8th. 230 deaths. March 13th. 1000 deaths. Most likely their outbreak was seeded from Wuhan sometime in late January. Just a couple of weeks to go from nothing to 1000 deaths. NYC was similar, they just tracked a couple weeks behind Italy, and it seems their outbreak was seeded FROM Italy, rather than from China. So it was likely at least the 3rd "generation" of human to human transmission by the time it got to NYC.

Saw a guy today when I picked up groceries. He was sitting in his car wearing a mask (even though he was by himself, which is stupid thing #1, I see no reason to wear a mask when you are in your own car... but I digress). When they came to load his car he actually did exactly what you described, he got out of the car, removed the mask, smoking a cigarette. Thereby defeating the whole purpose of the mask, and I hope cigarette smoke doesn't carry virus because the smoke basically went right into the kids face (not intentionally, but the wind carried it and the kid walked right through the puff of smoke).

What did I think of this guy? I think he was an idiot. I wonder why he even had a mask, I'm assuming he must be a doordash or instacart driver otherwise it made no sense at all. But he would still be an idiot either way for smoking the cigarette.

No, you should wear a mask i public if you are in an area that has the virus circulating (which would be most of Florida, certainly south Florida).

This guy was an idiot because he took off his mask, at exactly the wrong time, and smoked a cigarette to boot. It was a bizarre scene.

you missed the point, they want you to wear a mask to protect them , yet they do not want to protect themselves, taking off a mask to smoke.

but taking off their mask to smoke exposes them to the virus, so, they must not care enough to stop smoking, just to criticize those who do not want to wear a mask, again, I will do what I want and criticize you for not doing what I want you to do.

No, it's trying to reason with people who are often unreasonable, stupidly so. This whole defying public health orders among people who like to claim they are "law abiding citizens" and "love America" and the Constitution gets exposed as hollow rhetoric through their selfishness and lack of concern for others (often driven by scientific illiteracy and inability to reason logically). So authorities around the country have tried various encouragement tactics so as not to have to actually use enforce orders with arrest or fines etc..

You're both horrible people for being selfish, is that good enough for you? I actually don't really get your point. Are you seriously using kindergarten logic? Billy peed in the hallway too, so why are you punishing me for peeing in the hallway?

Notice I didn't compare California's numbers with New York's. I understand they're not directly comparable. The time course of the virus was well known back then, and population density as well as the amount of people-to-people contact are risk factors for any disease with human-to-human transmission. That's why if you're really interested in saving lives then you need to act early, and act aggressively with mitigation measures (e.g. lockdowns, ramp up testing, contact tracing, etc.). NYC is not more populous than and their subway system does not have as nearly as much ridership as those of Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing, or Shanghai. Judging by the economic performance of the East Asian countries, acting early and aggressively will likely lead to better economic recovery as well.
