20X the amount of people died from the Spanish Flu, and that's not adjusting for the increase in population. Coronavirus is a lot closer to the regular flu than to the Spanish Flu.
Coronavirus has a fatality rate of 0.5-1%, Spanish flu had a fatality rate of 2-2.5%. The regular flu has a fatality rate of 0.1%.
If you want to adjust for population, you may also want to adjust for the "minor" advances in medicine over the last 102 years. You think that may impact mortality?

The Spanish flu had an estimated mortality of 2.5%. This has a similar mortality rate. Actually the % numbers are quite a bit higher for this, though I suspect it will be more in the neighborhood of 1%. Splitting the difference. Not as deadly as Spanish Flu, but way worse than flu (how in the actual hell is anyone still making comparisons to the annual flu?). In either case, the worst scenario for COVID is clearly worse than 200,000 Americans. Millions were a possibility, maybe still is. The Spanish Flu pandemic went on for 2 years. We are only a few months in, this hasn’t yet had the chance to spread as widely as the Spanish flu. Information moves much faster now (good and bad), back then the flu would be spreading all over the place before the information. Here we were shutting down some areas BEFORE the virus even got there. If we didn’t shut down, the virus would have spread even to places saying “who cares, we only have x cases”. They conveniently ignore that without the shutdown, their community would have had x^y cases.
So just so we are clear, you believe within 2 years will the worldwide death toll will be closer to 50 Million or closer to 1 million(2 years of the flu). We all know the answer to this. You are just hoping this looks bad so Trump doesn't get re-elected. It's ok, I don't want Trump re-elected either. I'd vote for Amash in a heartbeat or won't cast a vote for President this coming election.

What's keeping the US locked down forever have to do with the rest of the world? It's pretty obvious most of this over the top hysteria is directed at the election not only for potus but a lot of seats up for grabs. And it will be more than comical to see 99% of this forum's views on the virus flip flop after trump's kicked out in november.

The point Actually this is a great time to do that. We know who this virus attacks and who it mostly doesn't. The numbers so far say it's closer to the Flu worldwide death wise as opposed to the Spanish Flu. It is 100% more dangerous than the flu to the elderly and people with underlying health issues. But for young people(under 25), the Flu is more dangerous. For People from 26-55, Covid-19 is more dangerous by a factor of about 3 than the flu.

Agreed. As a former Army Officer with three children currently serving in the Army, I am absolutely concerned that we have someone sitting in the White House with no core values or understanding of what a dedicated long term strategy even means. I'm convinced he would start a war out of fury if he was properly insulted or throw hundreds or thousands of lives away in a moment if he thought it would further his own political career. He just needs to go. If he wants to stay in politics let him be a Senator where he can't get anyone killed. He thinks he's smarter than the diplomats and a better military mind than the all the top generals in the world. I'd rather have Betty White as President than Trump. Then at least it would be cool to call it the "Betty White House".
Think it's a wash with the vast increase in population. Population has increased 4 fold since then, so I guess the increase in health care is somewhat similar. Maybe more, maybe less, but I think it's close.

The lockdowns are happening all over the world. Those that actually did a better job up front are doing more reopening, due to having less virus, such as South Korea. But almost all of the civilized world took similar measures. Even Sweden, which has been cited by some on the right as a model for “doing nothing”, has seen something like 90% reduction in mobility (and even with that, have higher death rates than neighbors).
