Yes lets stay closed and have 40% unemployment so we can sink further into a depression. Sounds like a sold plan...

So, 13 states with 2 or less deaths a day and we need to destroy the entire economy for that.

The needed government interference is providing people with reliable information, a plan that makes sense and can be accounted for, encouragement/incentives for goals and positive behavior. Without those things, it's irrational to expect the goals of the population to align with the goals of the government.

What if the choices for a society were depression and life, or depression and death?

Because those are quite likely the two realistic choices. Handling the virus better leads to confidence, which leads to a better economy.

I'm not saying everyone should stay "locked in", but going too far the other way very likely also leads to worse economic outcomes. Deaths is part of the economic calculus. We can voluntarily "depress" our economy, or we can have deaths "depress" our economy. There is no reality where the economy is normal until the pandemic is in the rearviewmirror.

But for those playing politics as a team sport, any dissension from the party line has to be met with defining the dissenter out of the in-group so the dissent can be dismissed as coming from untrustworthy others.

Those 13 states can open up completely right now and its not going to save the economy. When are you gonna wrap your head around this?

Let's just stay closed long enough to ensure that Trump is voted out of office. It's crazy. If we have 200k deaths in the US, then that sucks but life goes on. Way more people died from the Spanish Flu and we didn't shut down like this. Older people should stay sheltered. Younger healthy people should be out and about being smart and starting a new normal so to speak.

I've thought about this. Let's pretend for a minute this is true. The entire civilized world is conspiring to intentionally tank the global economy on the back of a "hoax virus" just because they hate Trump so much. If that actually WAS the case, whether he deserves it or not, wouldn't everyone agree that he can no longer be the president? For the sake of the entire global economy wouldn't we have to elect Joe Biden? Even if the conspiracy nutters are right, Trump is simply unfit to be the leader of the free world if for no other reason than the sheer amount of "irrational" hatred he attracts.

Well you sure can't listen to impeachedpotus since yesterday's briefing had him claiming that cases were going down everywhere. But tell that to the mid-west states that are showing increases. Then he lost his infantile temper and waddled off stage.

    Yup.
People can't get it through their heads that disliking trump doesn't automatically mean liberal. As a reminder, the majority of military officers disapprove of trump. You know what they do approve of?

But we did shut things down in 1918. Many schools and businesses did close, many public gatherings were cancelled, masks were required almost everywhere.
