Our country has gotten way out of balance when a someone tries to justify the discharge of a firearm at someone else for anything other than last resort self-defense.

brandishing a firearm is illegal in Florida, and I would think also in Georgia.

Edit: I am a 2nd amendment supporter, CCW permit holder, and a daily CCWer, just for the record.

Please tell your children......the side of the road is NOT the place to get into a disagreement - especially if it's PHYSICAL.

I doubt the intent of these rednecks was to shoot the jogger. If you accept that - what is left is how everything went down.

I'm not absolving the rednecks of anything - nor am I blaming the jogger for anything - just technical analysis.

What do you (with children) tell them how to handle something like this?
    Stay out of Georgia?

He wasn't wanted as far as I know. I don't think he was even a suspect. He was just a random black kid getting exercise.

    Classic Monday morning q'bing there....

The decedent goes from running away to running at the shooter in a split second.

The shooter does not fire a shot, until the decedent is coming directly at him, if not already engaged (can't quite tell since they're on other side of truck when first shot fired).

There's nothing a parent can do to prepare a person to be chased by armed rednecks while he's jogging. There comes a point where most people will defend themselves. The rednecks chose to escalate it. They chose to chase the guy down, block the road, and try to apprehend him with their firearms. They're at fault for everything.

    That's not what was reported.

"...according to police reports, Gregory McMichael saw Abery run by, and recognized him from the break ins..."

That's not "matched the description" (nor "...they all look the same" per @swampbabe ).

That sounds like a positive ID, that puts it squarely within the statute.

....AND a claim that needs to be thoroughly vetted and investigated.

That is my point. You cannot control what someone else does. But you can control (to some extent) what YOU do.

Not worth losing your life over.

Easy to second guess - even in technical analysis mode.

    Things do happen quickly.

    This was preventable.

    Sucks.....

From what I can find, he was not. All of this came about because the father saw Arbery looking into a window of a house under construction

    .
Ahmaud Arbery case: Police incident report differs from leaked video

Yet if you listen to the 911 call, the son was the one who called the police and said he saw the guy run from the property. Yet the father says the son was in the house.

    Also the report says
If they tried once before standing there with the shotgun, you would think that Arbery would not have run up to them so causally.

Bazza, you don't defend yourself from a person with a gun unless you think they're going to try and kill you (or somebody else). When two rednecks chase a jogging black man in Georgia, pull in front of him, block the road, and then get out with loaded weapons, plenty of reasonable people are going to believe that they intend to do harm and will try to fight for their lives.

What if we hear it on the grapevine? Can we go follow and gun someone down then?

The news report in the OP--first few seconds of the report.

The reference to 'trespassing' wasn't as grounds for citizens arrest, but addressed to the notion that he was just hanging out at a construction site.

Maybe, but it's not legal, or proper, and definitely not consistent with just out for a jog.

I agree. Except not sure these rednecks intended to shoot this guy. It happened in a neighborhood. Not some back road.

    Was only adding additional perspective.

Side of the road is not the place to fight anyone.

Does that matter? If you grab a gun and pursue someone, you must have some expectation of someone being shot. The shooter killed an unarmed man that had been chased down the street by 3 men. Shouldn't that shooter be held accountable? You pull the trigger, you own the consequences.

It's immediate knowledge of a crime being committed. A positive ID for what they say is a crime that occurred a few nights ago, is by its very definition not "immediate".

But he doesn't know that. He has two rednecks chasing him in a truck with firearms who are now blocking the road and exiting their vehicle. A reasonable person in his shoes is going to think they're going to try and ambush and kill him. They are 100% responsible. And there's no way to prepare a person for an event like that. Those guys broke the law and cost a man his life. They need to pay for that.

You that know the law better than I do can correct me but my understanding of a murder charge is it could only be brought if they premeditated the killing or were committing a crime themselves when he got shot.

I'm sure there could be other things but these two come to mind.

So what was the grounds for the citizen's arrest? That that shooter claims he looked like a guy suspected of robbing houses? Was the guy actually wanted for robbing houses? Is there any evidence that he burglarizes houses? If the shooter had knowledge of him being the neighborhood burglar, did he report it to the police?

I'd really like see the police report to see what he actually said about his suspicisions about him being the burglar. Either the OP's report is misquoting him, or every other news source is misquoting him.
