smdh..idiot ME still thinks reported fever or travel is required to justify use of a test. man died of pneumonia after having coughing and breathing problems but he didn't warrant a post mortem test.

The Melbourne police officer responding to Pellettiere's residence contacted the Brevard Medical Examiner's Office, which decided not to investigate.

"The totality of the case is always taken into consideration. Yes, he had a cough but no reported fever. As you noted he had several comorbidities. There was no indication of travel or a known exposure," Engelson wrote. "We felt that the case did not fall within our jurisdiction."

This was the Chinese study abruptly halted once Gilead refused to acknowledge the Chinese claim on the patent. Note that the Chinese company snuck in a patent in China and copied Remdesivir and it is APPROVED for treatment in China, but they can only sell it in China. I put ZERO stock in this information!

This site found the study on the WHO site before it was taken down.

Data on Gilead's remdesivir show no benefit for coronavirus patients

According to the summary of the China study, remdesivir was “not associated with a difference in time to clinical improvement” compared to a standard of care control. After one month, it appeared 13.9% of the remdesivir patients had died compared to 12.8% of patients in the control arm. The difference was not statistically significant.

If I put my China conspiracy hat on, it was an attempt by China to weaken Gilead's study and as a result their American patented drug. Leaving them with a corner on the market.

I find this Phase III study fascinating. If I understand it correctly (and probably do not) it is specifically targeting those COVID-19 patients with Hypertension, Type 2 Diabetes and other specific cardiovascular comorbidity factors for COVID-19.

AstraZeneca and Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute initiate Phase III DARE-19 trial with Farxiga in COVID-19 patients

Well. This is depressing. Concern that even developing a vaccine might not confer immunity because the immunity doesn’t last.

Despite the Chinese study closed by the government in China, Gilead is pushing for an early read out of their US study. Either this drug is a bust, or the Chinese were less than honest. I know where I am placing bets.

Exclusive: Trial of Gilead's potential coronavirus treatment running ahead of schedule, researcher says

Yep, I have been saying that for 6 weeks. I thought it was pretty telling that even before live trials in China were complete, the Chinese company had already ramped production.

Not true because the Chinese "patent", just like almost all of their semiconductor designs is NOT valid and enforceable outside the borders of China. Gilead's patent is recognized around the world ex-China.

cheap, generic heartburn drug being studied

Famotidine: New York hospitals studying heartburn drug as Covid-19 treatment

Tracey and his colleagues got the idea to study famotidine after it was observed that some patients in China taking the drug fared better than patients not taking the drug. He said studies on the Chinese patients have not yet been published, but that Dr. Michael Callahan, an infectious disease specialist at Massachusetts General Hospital who worked with coronavirus patients in China, observed that some people with lower incomes were surviving longer than their wealthier counterparts who also had heartburn.

When Callahan and the Chinese doctors looked closer, they found that many of the people with lower incomes were taking famotidine, whereas the wealthier patients tended to take a different, more expensive drug. "The poor peasants really seemed to do well on famotidine," Tracey said. "There are a lot of anecdotes passing around that give us some hope."
    ………………………………………………………………………………..
Tracey said in addition to the observation in Chinese patients, Florida-based Alchem Laboratories used a computer model to make a list of existing drugs that might fight coronavirus, and famotidine showed up near the top of the list. He said that's because, theoretically, the structure of famotidine is such that it could stop the virus from replicating, in the same way that protease inhibitors, which are used to treat HIV, stop that virus.

That is an innovative study. You are correct, they are taking a Type 2 diabetes medication with clinical endpoints to improve cardiovascular outcomes and seeing if the drug has benefit in protecting patients with pre-existing CV disease who become infected. The ability to put together a Phase 3 clinical study like this in such a short time is remarkable
