The only counties who have done better than us are Germany and South Korea (A weak argument could be made for Finland.) If you read what other counties are doing every country has made mistakes. Every country acknowledges them. Pointing out mistakes doesn't prove anything. Not when our results are on par with what I am told, by ever Democrat running for POTUS, are better medical systems in countries with better leadership. The way this board and the MSM make it sound our response has be a cluster@!&%. You don't have numbers to back it up. You could say, and I have heard it argued by people with PhDs in hard sciences, that our medical system is so good that it out performs the inept leadership. But, that brings up an inconvenient truth for Democrats. Why are you trying to destroy a medical system so powerful that it overcomes even the incredible ineptitude of Donald Trump? So has Trump not been that bad or is our medical system incredibly good? Single payer is off the table? It's not the number it's the trend. If the number is doubling every 3 days its dangerous. Start with a low number and play with exponents and it turns large very quickly. That is why everyone, even Trump's task force, recommend two weeks of declining numbers before a partial restart then another two weeks of declines before any more restarts. They did not mention a rew number. It is not basic math it is an exponential function. But it is math.
And the tattoo and massage parlors are opening earlier. And no, the average restaurant can't actually implement social distancing well. If you in practice cut the average restaurant's per square foot revenue in half, they will lose more money than they are losing while closed.
Exactly. This is what I don't get from the people calling the economy to be opened. If the justification for opening something like a hair salon is "nobody is going to get their hair done anyway". Then why the heck is there a rush to open!!? It's doesn't seem to be a rational argument. Most non-essential activity is going to be very light. Most business at restaurants will still be takeout. Most "leisure" type businesses won't have customers at all. The few hot local spots that can successfully draw customers to sit down or congregate closely (popular bars and such), are probably just spreading the virus, and will actually be killing off some of their customers. Think family members of those killed will resent that if infection can be contact traced back to their business? Hmm... That being said, we obviously can't be shut down for 12-18 months. I'm just saying we need to wait until the curve is definitely on the downslope. Maybe that's 2 weeks from now in some places that have a sustained reduction in cases. But we need to see it in the data first.

Better than us at what? We are at 128 deaths per million. The world average is 22. Only 13 of the 212 countries tracked by worldometers do worse than us. We are at 2.385 cases per million. The word average is 318. Only 16 of the 212 countries tracked by worldometers do worse than us.
Well that is not accurate at all. Here is a list of countries that have done better off the top of my head that you didn't list: Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Iceland, Singapore, Norway, Denmark, Israel, and Austria. Actually we do. We were extremely slow to roll out testing. South Korea had its first case the same day as us. The US tested 3,300 people when the disease ramped up in February. South Korea tested 94,055 in February. Considering we have a population of about 6x the population of South Korea, they had a per capita testing rate of about 170x when the disease was ramping up. While that is the obvious comparison given that they hit on exactly the same day, other countries have also rapidly ramped up their testing capacity. Iceland has tested almost 13% of its population at this point and is continuing to test at a very rapid pace. Australia ramped their testing up faster despite a later start and now has per capita tested considerably more people than we have. As such, we have one of the highest death rates in the world. We have an over 5% death rate in terms of the very inexact measure of confirmed deaths/confirmed cases. That suggests that either our health care system has done a terrible job or we are still missing huge amounts of cases, even in a relative sense. I strongly suspect the second. Wait, weren't you just talking about how a single provider (not single payer) system was the best in the world? Now we are saying that there weren't extensive testing/response problems nor problems in the healthcare systems? So how did we end up in the Top 10 of the deaths per million people of non-extremely small/principality countries?
Many are open now despite losing money. The issue is that they are having to consider the impacts on long-term relationships. But opening dining rooms with social distancing will likely have a negative effect on many restaurant bottom lines even compared to the current system. I suspect a number will try to ignore social distancing as well. Now, to return to the initial point: why are we opening businesses around the notion that nobody will utilize their services anyway?

I know you are joking but... my cousin is an officer in Portland OR and got a call out to one of those places for domestic violence. The poor girl was bleeding from the nose and ear but no one would talk to him or his partner, so no charges filed. Two days later she was found in a dumpster. Cousin testified in court it was the same girl. The dude walked. A year later a sting revealed there were some 70 “establishments” in Portland alone.
