There's more to the WHO's position than what is conveyed in that one Tedros's quote. I recommend you read the WHO's initial position and updated policy a month later. Easy reads that I've linked below. From the former (2/11): "Following that determination, WHO did not recommend any travel or trade restrictions, based on the current information available. Evidence on travel measures that significantly interfere with international traffic for more than 24 hours shows that such measures may have a public health rationale at the beginning of the containment phase of an outbreak, as they may allow affected countries to implement sustained response measures, and non-affected countries to gain time to initiate and implement effective preparedness measures. Such restrictions, however, need to be short in duration, proportionate to the public health risks, and be reconsidered regularly as the situation evolves. Countries should be prepared for containment, including active surveillance, early detection, isolation and case management, contact tracing and prevention of onward spread of 2019-nCoV infection, and to share full data with WHO" It then proceeds guidance on countries receiving travelers from affected areas, none of which we implemented. From the latter (2/29): "WHO continues to advise against the application of travel or trade restrictions to countries experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks. In general, evidence shows that restricting the movement of people and goods during public health emergencies is ineffective in most situations and may divert resources from other interventions. Furthermore, restrictions may interrupt needed aid and technical support, may disrupt businesses, and may have negative social and economic effects on the affected countries. However, in certain circumstances, measures that restrict the movement of people may prove temporarily useful, such as in settings with few international connections and limited response capacities." I mentioned yesterday I had a doctor friend who worked the ER who has coronavirus. I asked about her this morning and her brother in law told me she is doing better. That she said last night that she is feeling better than the day before so hopefully she is turning the corner to recovery.
I don't think the recovered column means much, since there seems to be very limited tracking on that stat.
Since we allowed flights, we would have needed to quarantine the passengers and crews afterward to limit spread. But, there was travel from elsewhere.

Man I hate to defend Trump, but are we even sure it is legal to force American citizens to stay in a foreign country and not allow them to return home when no law has been broken? Is there legal precedent? I mean some of them were certainly parents and spouses of people sitting at home. Can a sitting POTUS cost them their jobs (for example) by forcing them to stay? And what if China says they have to leave?
GM and Ventec have been working on this plan before T and his inept crew got involved. Then they (Da Crew) screwed up those "negotiations", but GM pressed forward anyway, retooling facilities (and not the one The Fool suggested, since it no longer exists in GM's asset portfolio) and getting hundreds of commitments from the UAW. Then he pretended to be mad, then happy, then use the Act, then not. He had no idea what was going on at any point, and I have zero confidence in anyone else in that circle, like Navarro and certaintly not the Kush. Soon they'll announce a deal, that has essentially been in place except for the final payout, and T will claim he was on it all along, and forced GM to bend the knee. The swarm will show up here and revise the timeline in order to match today's flow chart.
So we should applaud the WHO turning around a month later...but not the POTUS? Crap. Now I have defended him twice today. :/
It is, however, perfectly sane and legal to quarantine inbound US citizens. But that would require planning, organization, execution and communication.
It's not the "new argument," it's a factually accurate account of what happened. No one is suggesting they shouldn't have been allowed to return. They should have been put on special flights and immediately assessed and quarantined when they arrived.
I dont know 8f this is a factor, perhaps the data shows he wont have to? I know here in NC they do not expect a shortage, perhaps they are now seeing enough to spread around? Maybe not, just a possiblity? Or has some other company ramped up production?
