Venezuelan navy patrol boat attacks cruise ship, cruise ship sinks patrol boat...

Cruise ship collision sinks Venezuela navy vessel

"While the master was in contact with the head office, gunshots were fired and, shortly thereafter, the navy vessel approached the starboard side at speed... and purposely collided with the RCGS Resolute," it added.

"The navy vessel continued to ram the starboard bow in an apparent attempt to turn the ship’s head towards Venezuelan territorial waters."
Although the Resolute - a purpose-built polar expedition vessel - suffered minor damage, the patrol boat began taking on water after hitting its bulbous bow, according to the statement.

Columbia Cruise Services said the Resolute remained in the area for more than an hour and contacted rescue co-ordinators on the Dutch Caribbean island of Curaçao. All attempts to contact the Naiguata went unanswered and the Resolute eventually sailed to Willemstad on Curaçao, it added.

Somewhat humorous to ram a cruise ship only for it to have an icebreaking hull. And sink yourself.

Looking forward to hearing more about this story.

Maduro getting antsy over the increased US Navy presence in the area?

I did think the timing of our announcement was a bit odd given everything else hitting the fan right now.

Yes, the cruise ship is in the highest non-icebreaker class - it can operate without a dedicated icebreaking vessel. And they rammed the bow, the strongest part of the ship. Morons.

Article is limited and in Italian. The headline is encouraging, however.

The theory that the number of cases of COVID-19 will decrease once the weather becomes warmer may just be wishful thinking. Guayaquil, Ecuador is a city on the Pacific coast of Ecuador, it has a tropical climate with temperatures routinely in the high 80s or low 90s. Although Ecuador currently does not rank among the countries with a very large number of cases that's probably the result of insufficient testing rather than a low incidence of the disease. Something to think about.

And people here are worried about over-counting COVID deaths?

But, but...... the Surgeon Commander In Chief said warmer weather will make the virus miraculously disappear.

Iran could be a test model of a 2nd wave

Iran warns of coronavirus surge after many ignore 'stay home' rules

A senior Iranian health official said the greater Tehran area may face a coronavirus resurgence after many residents flouted advisories to stay home, crowding streets and causing traffic jams across the city as the country’s New Year holidays ended on Saturday.

Sad part is all the unemployed labor in close proximity to the crops that refuse to do the labor as they wait on their check. Think about the absurdity of a labor shortage simultaneous to record unemployment. Can't make that chit up its so bizarre

Here is an interesting take on the international economic impacts of the coronavirus.

China Wants to Use the Coronavirus to Take Over the World

The article speaks of the three levers China could use to improve their global position:
I don't see Russia allowing itself to be re-fashioned in China's image. Putin has an iron grip on the opinions of the Russian populace, and is working his own games to maximize Russian benefit and prestige under the coronavirus threat.

I think any gains in Chinese prestige among southeast Asian nations will be short-lived, because of both China's heavy-handed claims of the seas around southeast Asia, as well as its economic bullying of nations over issues like Taiwan and Hong Kong.

I actually think that China's economy will start to sputter after a while, with no one overseas to sell their products to. I'm not even convinced that areas outside of Wuhan have re-started manufacturing. The last report I saw (a week or two ago) indicated that many cities are pretending to return to work: factory lights are being left on, and bureaucrats are forging workplace attendance records. China's economy has a longer path back to being prosperous than Europe and the U.S., even if they are currently ahead of the curve on coronavirus recovery, especially if Trump can convince Europe to enforce sanctions against China until such time as they control their agricultural processes and stop proliferating these kinds of viruses. This might be an issue that Europe is willing to listen to and work with Trump, if Trump is smart enough to engage them.
