H1N1 was in the US before a working test was finalized. But once the test was perfected, testing ramped up very quickly. Over 1 million in two months.

Covid19 had a test the Chinese created well before the first case was reported here in the US. We could and should have been ready for widespread testing no later than Feb 1, like they were in S. Korea. The S. Koreans started planning on Jan 3, and were ready to test and isolate by the third week of Jan, when the first confirmed case hit the country. What was Trump doing all this time? Calling the virus a hoax to take down his administration!

You keep defending the indefensible. And trying to compare apples and oranges to make Trump look better. The reality is, the NY Times article is right. We had precious time to prepare, and Trump squandered it.

    Sigh.

non-sequitur: the failure to discuss a topic important to you demonstrates this board's continued hatred of trump.

gross generalization: everyone on this board is carrying on with "hatred of all things trump."

words in mouth: I didn't say you wouldn't acknowledge. I said that generally folks who use logical fallacies don't. And you didn't.

btw: your latest response is a red herring.

The story is an explanation of why we were so slow in testing for the virus. You want to dismiss it as partisan finger pointing ... that's not surprising.
But I think we need to look at why we didn't do better. You seem convinced that we couldn't have possibly done any better. That's fine.

Substitute Covid-19 in for H1N1 and the same is true. Don't see how this makes it any different than Obama's response to H1N1.

This doesn't address the questions in my post. I didn't ask about what the South Koreans did or have done in the past. I asked about the United States and I asked for precedent. You cited H1N1 and I pointed out to you that we've basically done the same with Covid-19. Obviously, our testing has been ramped way up as we now have more confirmed cases than any other country. Not to mention the fact that H1N1 isn't really a good example of containment, as 22 million contracted the virus.

Obama wasn’t called nearly what Trump has been called.

River set me straight on the personal insults. It was just as bad under Obama. I stand corrected

Singapore. Taiwan. Hong Kong. South Korea. Not everyone was unprepared or rocked by this thing. We would have been on that list if the infrastructure to dealing with it hadn't been dismantled in the previous three years. We could have bee on that list if we had spent the first month taking it seriously instead of pretending it was another nothing burger.

LOL. You have a certain poster or two who apparently like to come in, take a shot or two, claim they will not get into an argument and then play the victim when challenged. Reminds me of a sucker puncher in junior high school.

Many conservatives just don't support Trump and have no interest in defending him.

Well said. Some very selective memories based on one's perspective.

First US case was 1/20. First reliable US test was 2/28. We beat that by almost three weeks for H1N1.

The lack of "civility" and respectful disagreement in politics has went exponential under T. This is reflective of his approach to dissent and they way he addresses people. Sadly too many have allowed themselves to engage in the same tactics that he uses to quash dissent and rile up his base that seems to revel in his demeaning nicknames and insults

You're wrong about H1N1. There were cases in the US before a viable test was created. We had a a month before the first Covid 19 case here in the US, and what did we do with that time? Wasted it.

And you should care what S. Korea did. They prepared as the experts told them to prepare. Just how experts here in the US was asking for us to prepare. Again, did Trump listen? No. He was too busy claiming the virus was contained, soon we'd be close to zero cases, and one day, this will all magically disappear.

That'll be difficult, IMO, because blood testing is usually a lot more difficult to get done quickly than nasal swabs.

And what's worse is his base loves it. His base loves him demeaning Pelosi, Warren, Biden, Sanders, the entire media, even Fox when they go "against" him. Keeping aid from Michigan, calling everything a hoax or fake, etc. They all cheer it on.

But when you say one thing about him, how dare you speak ill of the Dear Leader.

Testing was 4 - 6 weeks behind because POTUS refused to take it seriously

As this week comes to a close, we have over 2.65X more positive cases and 3.85X more deaths than the previous 5 weeks combined.

    Bragging about ratings!?

These pandering and divisive tweets are not helping. It erodes my confidence that all possible avenues to protect our people are being explored. It re-enforces to me that he is motivated by and acting on something much more insular.

"Because the “Ratings” of my News Conferences etc. are so high, “Bachelor finale, Monday Night Football type numbers” according to the @nytimes, the Lamestream Media is going CRAZY. “Trump is reaching too many people, we must stop him.” said one lunatic. See you at 5:00 P.M.!" - trump

I was certainly critical of Obama but he didn't engage in as much name calling and belittling insults in his entire tenure as T does in a week. T lies more in a single press conference than O did in 8 years. T is just so over the top that he invites the ridicule and then uses it to claim persecution to convince his base that the disagreement with his decisions or actions are personal and have no sound basis other than personal dislike

Do you not learn from prior mistakes, or try to improve on previous examples? This virus was shown to be both more contagious, and to have more severe outcomes, therefore as soon as possible, be it 10 or 100 or 500 cases, you get after it in every way you can-- testing, vaccines, logistics etc. Wasn't done right... people dying.
