Well Trump decided not to quarantine the NY tri state area, but apparently a travel warning is being issued.

 

My wife and I have been walking every day since a few days after my surgery two weeks ago. Things have obviously changed much. Most of my neighbors who we've seen have been pleasant. We've all kept our distance. Unfortunately, there are biz here operating in contravention of Gov Newsome's orders and there are folks who are ignorant or defiant, and some of them proud of it. As I mentioned earlier, this was even after there was an outbreak in my town announced today!

Hernia. First time for a surgery for me. Outpatient. Recovered much quicker than I thought. Didn't need painkillers. Feeling much better in that regard.

Unfortunately, I was also just diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder the other day after a CT scan and bloodwork. It has been messing with my vision (ophthalmologist thinks it's hereditary). Fortunately, it is treatable.

I had a bulging eye for the last two months and my eyes were constantly watery. My vision with glasses isn't right yet and I was having double-vision issues. The double-vision frightened the bejezees out of me the most because it would happen all of a sudden while driving and I almost wrecked my car a few times.

I've been wearing a patch over my eye now to stop the double-vision issue. It's helped a lot.

But now I go around saying arrrr! a lot and call myself Ol' Chumbucket. My wife doesn't seem to get it.

Nevertheless, the precedents suggest that one state might well possess the power to seal its borders against another. For although the courts have long held that the Constitution protects the right to travel, including from one state to another, that freedom has been subject to a considerable caveat, articulated by Chief Justice Earl Warren in the Supreme Court’s 1965 decision in Zemel v. Rusk:

“But that freedom does not mean that areas ravaged by flood, fire or pestilence cannot be quarantined when it can be demonstrated that unlimited travel to the area would directly and materially interfere with the safety and welfare of the area or the Nation as a whole.”

This passage, along with similar language in other cases, is often pointed to as the authority for orders by national or local health officials requiring that a contagious person or persons be quarantined. Even the American Civil Liberties Union conceded in a 2008 report that “interstate travel may be restricted when there is a direct threat of disease.” Specifically, “in a pandemic, governments may either impose broad bans on travel or seek to prohibit travel only by individuals who are thought to pose a high risk.”

This is on me. I haven't taken care of myself anywhere close to what I should have over this past decade. Mainly I'm just too sedentary I don't work out anymore and am constantly working on my computer. Gotta get my too hot on.

Seriously though, it's been a big wake up call for me. Just have to stay safe right now from this bug. Wife and I have gone to the extreme in terms of social distancing. And we were doing it before it became a thing Benefit of being married to a woman whose research is in public health and child mortality; ntm and is Japanse We even keep our distance, just in case. And we're stocked on sanitizers and and masks etc. Not a good time to be on an immuno-supressant, though i'ts looking like I won't have to be to campus until September, so there's that.

Wearing the patch ain't all that bad since it has helped me greatly with the double-vision and being able to get work done. Though I've gotten some gawking.

 

Sorry to hear about all that, Mutz. Getting older sucks, man. And one can’t really even appreciate the late life consequences of not taking care of yourself when younger, so it’s a tough deal. I’m only 40, and I’ve already received some big hints in this department.

For the last five years or so, I’ve kept saying that I am going to start exercising. I’m on sabbatical this semester, so I finally had no excuse not to join a gym. I did. Then two weeks later it was closed.

 

Good luck with that Mutz. I had that a couple of years ago and healed quickly but my doctor (also a runner) cautioned me to be careful. For a year, I would still get tender on trail runs where the climb was really steep and I had to extend that leg and power up. To this day, it feels wanky if I walk all day of all things.
